Angry TL accelaration not upto satisfaction ...

I have a 2001 TL (non-navi). It has put on nearly 1000 miles. I feel that the accelaration (0 - 60) is poor. Especially when you pick up behind other vehicles in a traffic stop. Also, the ride feels not so comfortable at this time, when the accelaration is stop-go-stop. I fill 93 octane rating gas. But accelaration when the road is clear (a stop-go situation) is good. I don't know whether this is the way TL behaves or may be I need to get my vehicle checked-up by the Dealer.

Cheers!

dont worry my dear picky car owner...all cars with automatics, no matter how much horsepower they have, suck at choosing the right gears for the amount of throttle that is given, that is the lag that the automatic transmissions produce, the 0-60 figure for the TL that is around 7 seconds is when you floor the gas, and when you floor the pedal, the automatic transmission shifts down 1-2 gears depending on speed, and that is when you really feel the acceleration and power, but otherwise, a little tap on the pedal and for a automatic to respond fast is not possible without an aftermarket torque converter...

that's why you use SS mode... you can down shift manually that way. the auto tranny sucks.

My performance improved at about 1000 miles, so yours might also improve when the engine is fully broken in.

I personally think the best answer to his problem on street start (5-60MPH) is to use SS mode. even if you have a corvette engine with TL auto tranny in auto mode, it'd still suck. so use SS when you know you need to down shift to pump out more juice. just like driving a manual if you have before, when you know it's time to downshift, use SS.

I agree with others and believe that it's the auto tranny. Try the SS mode, if you are still not satisfied, maybe you need a WRX, or Type S. The TL sucks at high speed (100mph+) cuz the 4th & 5th gear are OD.

Ghost, I meant they are relatively slow compared to 1st 2nd & 3rd gears. My TL pulls pretty hard for a big sedan like this in the first 3 gears. I can feel the car is really slowing down once I shift to 4th gear. But I rarely had chance to do so... I have put 20000km on my TL. Only went up to 180km once and above 200km twice.

I know the feel that you guys have about the 5-60. I guess there are 2 possible reasons

1) the car didn't down shift to 1st gear. If you are not that slow and didn't floor the car. Sometime it will just pull in 2nd because it's more comfortable for people onboard.

2) the car did shift back to 1st but switched to 2nd gear too fast.

Don't use the SS mode. Use the 1-2-D3 manually, and you might get a better result.

200 km? how fast is that? 100 km = 60 mph right? ive gone past 120 to around 125 maybe, but i got scared and slowed down cas i got stock tires (and everything else). what rpm range are we in after we shift from the top of 3rd to 4th? and at what rpm does our v-tec kick in? i never pay attention to that stuff.... all i know is i can get from 0-120 pretty fast on my way home on the freeway right after the movie gone is 60 seconds(it was midnight and the freeway was VERY EMPTY), ohh and i usaully cruz at 90mph at 2500-2700 rpm on 5th gear (makes me feel that this engine could last forever.)

I've got no problems with the TLs acceleration. In fact, I love it. People that ride in my car marvel at how smooth and fast the car feels. I also own a 98 Mustang GT and I can honestly say that the TL could hold it's own.

Wink

No problems with pick up here hit the gas and it moves. I usually cruise the highway at about 70-75 and at that speed she's just cruising along. when I have the chance I love using the SS which seems to get up to speed very quick
