Long time lurker and amazed at the great info and DIY threads here for the 2nd Gen TL. Finally bit the bullet and picked up a "mechanics special" that will be my extra commuter car and gas sipping grocery getter instead of my super thirsty lifted Land Cruiser.
I was originally planning on buying car from a customer at our shop (I'm a svc mgr at a large independent auto repair facility) but found a 2003 on C-list with a badly slipping tranny for $800. It's got a very clean interior, clean exterior other than minor hail damage, and 149K miles.
I offered $450 with the stipulation that it be as advertised and that I'd come with a tow dolly that night. He was an older gentleman, and agreed. Went down and picked up the vehicle but found out a few more things during my discussion with him. The HVAC blower doesn't work on any speed, the car intermittently has a no-crank no-start issue even though all electrical accessories work fine and the dash is lit up like normal, and the vehicle will only shift with the shift interlock manual bypass engaged at the shifter.
Not too concerned as the shift interlock is likely the brake switch, the lack of HVAC blower is going to be a simple diagnosis, but the intermittent no-crank issue is a puzzle. I haven't had an issue with it yet and have 10 starts or so at this time. Maybe a security/immobilizer problem as it won't even try to crank at all, no click or starter activation so not a Fuel Pump relay issue. Anyway, excited to have a nice ride once i've located a donor AV6 transmission and can get a weekend to swap it out. I have plenty of lifts at my disposal, so that will make the trans swap a lot easier.

PS: Found a nice bonus when going thru the 1" thick stack of prior service records, it has all new KYB struts 39K miles ago and OEM timing belt, water pump, tensioner, oil filter gasket, and plugs 22K miles ago at the dealer. That's a nice $2600 in maint I don't have to do!

Folks, it’s been fun and I appreciated all the help I’ve received from this forum but I sold my 2000 TL a few days ago. Why? The car ran great but I’m an old school domestic car guy and the pending timing belt and possible trans issues never made me feel comfortable with the car. It also didn’t fit my needs because I used it as a secondary car and the lack of a folding seat really limited the utility. The only issues I had with it was the CEL came on due to the gas cap and it was real particular on having premium gas. When I bought it, the paint was toast so I got a cheapo paint job for $900 so I basically lost on the sale but I enjoyed the time I had it.
