How to...... Remove badging ...pics and vid inside 3G Garage #E-016
Ok, what sparked this thread is something I read a week or so ago, somebody removed their badges with a rasor blade and was looking for a solution to fix the markings left by the blade!! Not meaning to single you out (who ever you are, I don't even remember your nickname) I just can't stand to see another "how do I remove my badges?" thread... or even worse, "I effed up my badge removal, help please" thread.
Here are the tools needed for removal:
- Kettle of Hot-Warm water
- Dental floss
- Goof off/ goo gone/ or other adhesive removing liquid
Pour water onto the trunk, the heat from the water will make the badges much easier to remove. Parking in the sun prior to doing this helps aswell.
Next comes the video.... take some Dental floss and "floss" behind each badge, the sawing action will cut through the double-sided tape perfectly..
Badge Removal VIDEO......click here..
Now you see how fast and easy that was? Good... no more rasor blades for taking badges off...
Now what I found was the easiest way of removing the tape was to soak it in goof-off and roll it up in a little ball slowly with your finger. Pushing from one direction will cause the tape to roll up and be able to remove big pieces rather easily.
(in the reflection) Me sayin' Aloha to all the Hawaiian TL'ers
Here we see the after effects of the removal...
Time to polish and remove the swirls.
- I used my PorterCable polisher and some Meguiar's DACP (Dual Action Cleaner Polish) with a rough Orange pad to start off...
- Then I lightened up on the density of the pad (White pad) but continued to use the DACP.
- I continued with the DACP and the white pad until I achieved desired reflection
- then topped with (what did I use here ) pretty sure it was Poorboy's caranuba polish followed by Porboy's EX and then Natty's Paste Wax.. I basically stuck with the PB line for the trunk's shine.. I've got literally thousands of dollars in detailing products at my house and happen to be able to choose from all of the bests' Klasse, Poorboy's World, Zaino, Meguiars, P21S, Liquid Glass, etc, etc, etc... It's fun choosing what part of the car get's what product.. kind of a ballance between results and removal ability...
and a reflection shot to finish off...
Enjoy the DIY, If I had more energy I would have set up this post "properly" (with an actual structure ).... sorry for be'in lazy.. I'll put it together later and see if this can get stickied somewhere...

the 3.2 is already off... the method for removal is identical to the one for the ACURA badging. Just instead of putting the floss behind the "ACURA" put it behind the "3.2TL"
I've got pics of the 3.2 coming off but it's basically the same, plus my file limit is nearly maxed on the hosting website..
Thanks for all the compliments guys.... you got me blushin...lol
Rob, I'm planning on getting that frontlip from RayLacks shipped to you... when I come down to pick it up I'll bring down some cleanin supplies and tools.. we'll attack some of your swirls
and Fsttyms1, polishing IS easy, however I've seen too many people think that and end up putting holograms onto the paint. You know, but just for the others, if the polishing pad is pushed too hard into the surface, itwill still vibrate but not spin.. this vibration force from one side of the pad causes the pad to scuff the surface... the finish looks great until, the car is moved into the direct sun...
I watched a friend of mine (using my supplies)... put some BIG & LONG holograms in his cousin's Black 04 CLK430...
His cousin looked at me "you can fix that right?" ,
"yeah...it's because he rushed through the process....I've got patients, I'll fix her for ya!"
Long story short, it is easy, but it does take patients.... otherwise you'll do more damage than good..

The holes are only under the "A" badge.. everythin' else is double sided tape.
side Q. Does anyone know which Honda viechle's badge will fit into the "A"holes (nice play on words) on our TL?

Correct... it does not.
What you saw aftrer the goof-off removal step is the untouched perfectly clear paint that was under the badging. Sand blowing, bad car wash (automatic), avg weathering and time will eventually cause the swirl marks found on the rest of the trunk. Since the badges were covering/protecting that part of the trunk from the weathering, you are able to see a perfectly clean/clear surface where the badging was.
If that's not clear just say so...

GREAT DIY!! Guys, do you know if I can rent one of those polishing machines anywhere (ie/ Home Depot, Autozone, etc)? I would love to debadge my TL but I dont have a machine, neither do I know anyone who does. If I can't get my hands on one, can I do it by hand?

Removed Car Dealership Emblem
Thanks to this thread, I felt confident enough to debadge the car dealership emblem. Call it a pet peeve, however I hate when dealership has put their badge on a car and I forgot to request they remove their emblem when I took the car in for service.
Therefore, I waited until a warm day.
1) First, I cleaned the area by the badge with water and cotton towel. In step 2 below, I did not want to rub any dirt into the paint and possibly cause scratches.
2) Using about 20" of waxed dental floss (not dental tape); I started at one end and kept the angle of the dental floss at about a 30-degree angle with a slight outward angle. This was to avoid the lip on the trunk and to keep the dental floss rubbing against the emblem. Then cutting using each hand like a two man saw.
If the dental floss starts to fray, then slide some of the newer floss into the emblem and continue.
You might want to put a towel on the bumper so when the emblem falls it will not possibly mark the bumper.
3) At this point, I have a strip of adhesive tape left on the car. The adhesive tape that was remaining on the trunk I removed with my fingernail. I only used enough pressure to start peeling the tape in little pieces. I would squirt hot water that you get out of your indoor faucet onto the tape to make removal easier with my fingernail.
4) With the car on level ground or the front-end facing downhill, open the trunk all the way up. I applied Goo Gone using a Q-tip to the remaining tape residue and the dirt that was beneath the emblem. I opened the trunk all the way up to prevent excess Goo Gone from running down into the Acura emblem. Let Goo Gone sit a few minutes and wipe (not rub) with clean cotton towel.
5) Close the trunk and wash the area with a lot of water.
6) Of course, you need to wax the area since Goo Gone would strip off the wax. (I was lazy and skipped this step.)
