As I was getting ready to sell my 2001 Accord EX V6 (which is a very close sibling to the 2G TLs, hence my post here) I noticed a puddle of gasoline on the ground just in front of the left rear side suspension. Given the brake lines rusted out a couple of years back and required replacement, I figured one of the fuel lines had gone in a similar fashion.
BZZZZT! I'm sorry, that was incorrect. The top of the gas tank has a very shallow depression which can hold water and allow corrosion to eat its way through the tank. I did some searches on this forum and noticed a number of similar reports, and instead of resurrecting an old thread, I opted for starting this one; don't know if it'll help any of y'all, but just in case...
As you stated, your 2001 Accord EX V6 is a close sibling to the 2G TL and CL. In the case above the Accord shares the same gas tank part# with its higher-end siblings 17500-S84-A10. For you Northern folks prone to rust with either model, a salvage yard would be a good first stop because a new fuel tank from Honda is $391.89 before shipping.
Just for 'grins a giggles' I did a quick search on car-part.com for my state and the lowest used advertised price listed was $59.99 8 miles from the house; therefore, depending on one's preference and their value based on the 'opportunity cost' of drudging through a salvage yard, IMHO it's a toss-up.
Mine started to rust on the driver's side which was causing a large leak EVAP code. Only after pressurizing the tank and spraying soapy water all over did I find it because it was so well hidden. I grabbed an aftermarket tank locally, scuffed it and sprayed it with rubberized undercoating.
Interesting. My car is a clone to yours, except mine is an 03. Amazing the tank could rust through, and yet no indication of rust around the "wheel well lip", which generally begins first, in our north eastern states.

Yup, my old Accord is the same way, no rust on the wheel well lip, rusted through tank.
^^ yeah living in the rust belt is hard on cars. I've spent considerable time trying to keep ahead of the rust. Rear floor pans started going last year so that was a project.
Wheel well lips started to rust a couple years ago but hopefully have slowed down the inevitable there. Almost all 2G's I see around here have ass rust all over
