I took my TL-S to 140 on the Garden State Parkway two summers ago while racing an automatic 350z. The rush was incredible, and my TL handled herself extremely well - even around curves. I was very impressed. We raced from exit 163 down to exit 144, which is close to 20 miles.

speaking of GS.. a new generation GS actually joined the race on the Parkway at one point that night, but he backed off once we started going around the curves. Someone was either scared or they need to step their game up!

115 in the tl, open highway up to the point i hit 115, then i saw more traffic ahead and had to slow down.

Do you guys really hit like 130 and higher on public roads? Do you guys make sure your tire speed rating is appropriate for the speed your going too? Or do you just do it?

I don't drive fast anymore, but when I did it was on public roads! I haven't ever been to a track. I never even considered the speed rating on my tires, but that's a very good idea...

If its the Type S, you should have "V" rated tires, for speeds up to 149MPH (240 km/h)

"H" rated tires are only good for 130MPH (210km/h)

you just do it.. a tires speed rating is basically an insurance policy on the tires.. they wont be at fault if anything happens to their tires when going above the recommended speed... the large 4x4 tires have ratings of like 80mph or some rediculous speed like that and clearly they can go 100 + without spontaneously combusting.. im sure tires with higher ratings are more durable at those speeds for a reason.. but 115-120-125 does not mean anything bad will happen after that limit necessarily..

idk about 99's but in my owners manual for my 2000 tl-p says its safe to down shift from 5th to 4th 140mph and below so 125 isn't gonna kill the motor, 3rd will go to 100 (maybe more but i let off) and correct me if im wrong, but to make it to 140-150 u have to be in 4th in a tl-p.

different situation.. gear ratios are different... the upper gears are longer allowing this.. i wouldnt suggest doing 140 in 4th gear in the 5AT TL's..

if you watch the video in the thread about wether or not top speed is limited, the guy uses ss and you can see him in fourth with his speedo at 150 or 155 can't remember, but then he shifts to 5th and lets off, and with the owners manual saying its ok i think it's alright for the car, the driver is a different story though.

that's for down shifting, and i said 140 other people take it to 150-155(according to speedo) cause i got it out of a thread in the 2nd gen forum, maybe you should ask the person who put them on.

The Fastest

I have a 2002 TL that I got up to 140 on the interstate one time and I have driven over 100 numerous times in it also. Its so stable and smooth that it handles 120 mph like its 60 in other cars.
I also used to own a 93 Suzuki 750cc Katana and I had that up to the rev limiter @ 158 mph. I don't drive that fast anymore though.

tire speed rating is VERY important. the speed rating is not how fast the tire can travel in a straight line before "spontaneously combusting". its the speed the tire can travel while on a slight turn and the tire staying on the rim. if u exceed the speed limit on the tire while your making a minor turn, disaster can happen at those speeds.

The other day, I actually took the TL on a back road and hit 135 on speedometer (don't know what the actual was) anyhow, the car was smooth and it felt like I could get more out of it, but I didn't want to risk getting a nice ticket and/or arrested. Anyhow, I am actually looking to not speed as much and turn the TL into more of a luxury vehicle. I have an 08 TL w/ Navigation and 2 TV's for the backseat passenger's. Please let me know what you all think I should do.

so technically i should have had 4 sets of tires on 4 different cars "spontaneously combust" already b/c the rating is so dead on and important.

i guess i'll go hide in a bomb shelter form the swine flu while im at it...

like i said.. it has some truth.. but mostly legality purposes..
lets not assume everyone is so stupid to take turns at 130 mph.. if they are.. its most likely not the tire that will kill them.. its their stupidity..

i'll go ask around to see how many people's tires have exploded on their cars though, let you know when i find one

it doesnt take research to know that playing with fire will burn you.. people take firey shots now dont they?

im nobody's mother.. and neither or you..

also wanna add. when you upgrade your tires speed rating. A tire like that might actually make the car handle worse because it offers more dry grip than your car was designed for. although the TL has factory V rated tires if im not mistaken. i've put
H, U and even T rated tires on one of my cars that is much faster than my TL and never had ANY issues with it.. even on the peanut track.

often means lower tread which also means worse all-season driving and DANGEROUS in unsatisfactory weather and road conditions.

im not trying to put anyone in danger.. but to make people go around thinking their tire will blow up if they go fast.. is stupid

if they arent using the car for high speed track racing.. they shouldnt be haulin ass around curves anyway..

no room here either.. traffic doesnt really die down enough to do anything like that on highways.. and closed roads and such are watched pretty closely b/c of street racing...

i just make due with visits to the strip and peanut every 3 or 4 months... wish we had an oval track to just unleash hell for a couple miles

im not talkign about making a sharp turn. if u exceed the tires speed rating while going straight, you should be fine, as long as the tires not rated for 120 and u do 180. the problem happens when u exceed the speed rating and make a slight bend (only a couple degree), thats when the side wall will start to fold on it self. ive learned and seen real live videos of this. done by a professional and on a closed course.
