Hi guys,

I have recently bought a TL 2002 with 100k on it. About one month ago, the engine check light turned on. By suggestion of a friend, I disconnected the battery and after reconnecting, the light went off. But yesterday and after one month, the light came on again! I checked the car with an OBD II scanner and it turned the P0370 code.
I've been driving the car for about 1000 miles. The only problem I noticed was that sometimes (maybe 7-8 times) gear up from 1 to 2 happens at high engine rounding speed (3500-4500 rpm). But generally the transmission works fine.
Does anyone have any idea how I can get rid of engine check light?

Is the code: P0730 or.......P0370 ????

Ya probably can temporarily get rid of the CEL light by pulling #13 fuse, 7.5A (clock back-up) located in the interior passenger side fuse panel. But, It'll usually come back after awhile. The fault causing the code needs to be investigated before putting the CEL to rest.

The code is P0730. The dealer I bought the car from told me it is a problem with transmission solenoid and usually costs $2500 to repair, but he will give me a good discount and will replace the solenoid for $1200! I cannot trust him anymore, because I'm sure he knew this car such a problem.
Do you think I need to repair the transmission or is there any other cheaper way to repair that?

Hey Navid, I'm unsure how long ago you bought your car, .....but if the CEL code was on at time of purchase or shortly thereafter, then the dealer "did indeed know" of the tranny issue. Did ya get a really good deal on the car ? How about any kind of warranty ? Used cars and dealers can be deceptive at times.

I'd get another evaluation of the tranny's condition before moving forward. How many miles are on the car ? Has the tranny been previously replaced ? How is the transmission shifting presently ? Is the ATF fluid level ok ? Does the fluid appear dark in color or smell burnt ?

Sorry about the Quiz.......but, without additional info, it's difficult to analyze !

Hi,
I guess he knew about the tranny issue! I got a good deal, but I'm not sure if I can afford to replace tranny!
Millage is 108k. ATF fluid level is Ok, but I guess it smells like burnt. The oil color is not dark, but not light though! It is something in between. As I see on the carfax, the tranny never been replaced, plus I see that transmission oil and filter has been changed just once at 6k.

Check with your local Acura dealership's service dept, have them check your car's vin # for recall work previously performed. There was a recall on the TL trannys to be inspected by the dealer. Some cars had a jet kit installed, while others had trannys replaced. Acura can tell you if anything was done.

The P0730 code indicates a problem within the shift control system. The tranny fluid should be analyzed for contamination. Sometimes when people experience slipping, they drain & fill the tranny fluid, replace the filter, clean the shift solenoids and check all the wiring connections and grounds. But oftentimes, this is too little..... too late !

For the dealer who sold you the car to replace the "solenoid" for $1200 sounds a bit expensive, unless they are 100% sure and are willing to guarantee that will fix your tranny. If the tranny is bad, you can have a used '06-7 Accord tranny installed for not much more money.

The solenoid assembly set for the shift control valves, along with the the clutch pressure control valve are all replaceable. If you search, you'll find that some people have cleaned the screens within the solenoids.

I'd be willing to bet that the transmission is about to belly up. I'd recommend doing a 3X3 drain & fill method as described here on the forum but instead of acura DW1 ATF, use Amsoil synthetic import ATF. This stuff works awesome on Acura/Honda transmissions and I've seen it take (yes TAKE away) away two long term transmission issues on my 1998 Accord and also my wife's 1998 CL. We also use it in the other 3 Acuras as well! Amazing stuff indeed. If that doesn't work...I'd begin looking on car-parts.com for a cheap, low mileage transmission!
