Erasing codes for CEL

My check engine light is on and I need to pass inspection... It's for my tranny - it's acting up but I don't have the money to fix it before inspection. If I get a code reader and clear my codes in the parking lot of the inspection place, will I still pass inspection or will they be able to tell that there's still something wrong with my tranny...

Unknown. But if you pull the clock fuse, it'll clear the codes.
Try clearing the codes, and see how long before the codes come back.

I had P1739 and P1740, pulled the pressure switches, cleaned them with brake fluid,
put them back, and reset the codes. 415 miles and one week later, no codes.

The reset computer needs some miles on it before you go in for testing or else the reader will know its been recently reset. Id try pulling the clock fuse (#13)in the passenger side fuse panel to clear the codes and see if that helps but idk you say the tranny's acting up. Like how?

does your inspection use a smog machine or plug in reader?

If its just a visual inspection, do the clock fuse trick around the corner

there is a driving sequence in the owner book, 45+ minutes of various speeds in town and freeway, up down steady- to give the computer enough info for a `reading` test
after a clear/reset

A related note that could be of interest...

I've been playing lately with a Garmin Ecoroute HD, which is a device that plugs into your OBDII port and communicates with your Android or Nuvi via Bluetooth. I haven't had the opportunity to check codes yet (haven't had any) but allegedly this thing will read and reset codes. It's hard to say how specific it will be for the transmission codes. But anyways, it's really cheap and it's pretty much the future of scanning and resetting codes. You can buy it at many auto parts stores allegedly for under $100. I borrowed one from a connection I have and I've been playing around a lot with watching the engine data. It's pretty entertaining.

for those of us with phones that only make calls

Harbor Freight tools has the obd II reader for 100 bucks on sale all the time
Ca residents can do their own diagnostics with it

ca smog laws prevent parts stores from doing free readings like the rest of the country,,make you go to a shop for $150 `minimum diagnostic fee`
for 2 minutes work they still get the 150

I have one of the Harbor Freight ODB II readers, and it works great on my 2002 Acura. I read and reset my trannie code after changing the trannie fluid. So far so good.

BTW, does anyone know what codes the California smog inspection looks at (besides the permanent trouble codes)?

whatever codes are in the ECU memory, esentially any code your HFT reader will pull up

for smog test ECU has to have enough stored info or it gives a message of `not ready for testing`
thats to prevent the parking lot reset~

it takes 30-45 minutes driving to have enough info about how the smog parts are working
They are looking for any smog codes,,,but trans code might fail you solely on CEL light on

best thing we can do is run seafoam thru tank a few tanks before inspection- it raises hydrocarbons while crud burns thru,,,not good for the inspection numbers so a month before if possible

Also do the egr port and passage cleaning if over 75kmiles
and new ngk iridium spark plugs do wonders for the TL after 60-70kmiles

The good running TL has almost nothing on the readouts,, example ~allowed 150ppm, measures 1 or 0

The OP is apparently not with the forum this past year.

But for the record, 20,000 miles and one year later, the trans codes have not come back.
