Dies in Gear

Just happened. Car starts and engine runs fine. Drop in reverse, D5, D4 and stalls. Car rolls in neutral. After a quick search on my phone, read about revving to about 1500-2000 rpm and drop in gear. Almost stalled but then drove. Was able to drive it home. When in gear, D or R, I can hear some kind of clanking but haven't been able to locate source just yet. There is no CEL or pending codes.

Battery is good and fully charged. When I did the VC gaskets, cleaned out the egr port and passages in the plenum and plenum cover. Recently cleaned TB. Also cleaned out connections for TPS, MAP, trans solenoids. Also recently cleaned solenoid screens and change trans filter. Still need to do 3x3 change. Also recently change PS supply line. No traces of any leak here.

I've been chasing a few oil leaks but levels are good. Trans doesn't "slip" while drtiving but have had a few other issues.

One previous issue was while leaving mildly from a light or other stop, pressing the gas did not rev the engine. Seemed like it was starving then catch and go. Seems like the EGR and TB clean took care of that. Will try cleaning MAF, but right now it runs/shifts fine. 229K on the clock.

I've already replace the front and right side motor mount. Can one of the others, if bad, cause this?

Any clues?

I wanted to add that the engine dies as if the TC is locked up. Like dropping the clutch in a manual causing it to stall. The rev to 1500 and drop in gear seemed to break it free. Going to reclean all the solenoids and 3x3 today.

Well solenoid screens were clean, ohmed out OK (~5 ohms). First drain of 3x3. Drain plug was pretty well coated with material. Will do 2nd drain tomorrow.

Meanwhile, here's the drain plug pre-wipe.

Didn't have time to do the 3rd drain/fill yet. My GF drove the car to a few appointments today and says it runs great. Will still do #3 but need to get more trans fluid.

Well 3rd drain and fill today. Got about 150 miles including some freeway driving since #2. Still quite a bit of material on drain plug. Meanwhile runs and shifts fine.

As far as the lockup and studder/shudder. I'd say yes for now. Shifts fine. Still concerned over the amount of material on the plug. I'll likely do a few more drain/fill over the next few weeks,

Next up timing belts but I may pass and just have a local shop do it.

How many timing belts does your car have?
