Tough when you lose a good local mechanic

Hey Folks,

I just wanted to say this board has been great help to me in the maintenance and some repairs to my 08 RL. With your help most items I could do myself. This next item though I will use a mechanic for a timing belt for my 12 Acura. A local guy I have used on occasion for 20+ years just retired. He always trustworthy, had fair prices and always go out of his way to help you. So with the recommendation of others I called a few places to find someone new. I figured I'd share some info I gathered in this process since folks do often ask prices on timing belt jobs and probably especially helpful for folks in the NJ area.
Prices are for full kit including the idler and tension pulleys for the timing belt.

1. Local Acura dealer - $1167 + tax
2. Honda Dealer - $1200 + tax
3. Next closest Honda Dealer asked if it was a 4 or 6 cylinder. I said thank you.
4. Indy place - $830 (uses Conti kit). I was surprised he wasn't familiar with Aisn.
5. Indy place I have used for alignments and tires - $840 (uses Gates kit).
6. Indy place - $1150 (uses Aisn kit)
7. Indy place - $700 (uses Aisn kit)

The last two shops are about 2 miles from each other.

I have read that some folks use the Aisn kit but purchase the actual timing belt from Honda/Acura. I wonder if I should spring another $75 for the factory belt or just use the Mitsobushi belt. Any comments from folks who have gone this route? Thanks!

Hi
My local Acura dealer will do a timing belt for $959 but that only includes the TIming Belt, WP and tensioner. The 2 roller pulleys are an additional $200.
That's what I'm finding in NJ. Not sure if you are in NJ also. Thank for the info.

I did my timing belt, water pump and oil pump seal all at the same tie, with tensioner and pulleys. It was an indie shop that was run by a former Acura tech. It was ~1300-1350$ with everything included IIRC

What you should do is go to your local Honda or Acura dealership and do an oil change..ask to speak to the mechanic and then ask if he would do your timing belt and other services on the side for cash. A lot if mechanics do this side business at their own home for half the price charged at their dealership.
