Took a laser hit going 80 in 40 on FDR

Got hit with laser today approaching Brooklyn Bridge from the south via FDR.

Radar detector had nothing to say. 80 in a 40...

Sorry about that. I should take it easy on the FDR. Its just so damn easy to get going a little fast when there aren't to many people on the road at 5:40 in the morning.

What time did you get lazered?

I would guesstimate around 5:30pm.

The cars were held up right after the small tunnel to FDR by contruction so when I cleared it I only had 1 car and 3 lanes ahead of me. Obviously I needed to pass that stupid FX35....

I was waiting for someone to ask...but nobody cares!

it went like this:

1. I was stuck in traffic for like 30 minutes, then after a tunnel and after passing construction site I was the 2nd car out of the hole...with 3 clear lanes ahead of me.

2. There was just one FX35 standing between me and 1st place...don't ask.

3. So while I'm passing it, I'm thinking...there's a cop next to BK bridge every once in awhile...

4. A second later looks like this:

chirp chirp...shifting f...chirp chirp

5. SLAM BRAKES....tap tap mute button to disable laser jammer

6. Pass by cop with the most innocent look doing exactly 40mph.

The End

Bob...the only thing saving you in your V is RESTRAINT!

No radar/jamming technology is going to save you from 100mph over limit...

Great story. So what do you mean tap tap to disable the laser the jammer?

Is that because the jammer covers only the front area, and you wanted him to get a reading at 40 from the front, so he did not go after you for a jammer after he lasered you on side different than the front?

What is the coverage of the laser jammer, like 120 degrees side to side and up and down, or something more narrow, with a different profile for width vs height. Just curious.

Chas,

The laser jammer blocks hit to the front or the back.

In the current situation, the cop was in front of me, several hundred feet if not a 1,000 feet away.

The reason I went "tap tap" was to disable the jammer after I dropped my speed.

I didn't want him to get an idea that I am jamming him (I wanted him to get a good reading on me).

Pissing them off is a reason enough to get a ticket...so if I can avoid it, I try.

There is no such thing as hitting someone on the side with a jammer. The favorite places to get shot are the license plates and the headlights as they are good reflective surfaces.

To use a laser a cop needs to be stationary and the weather needs to be nice. In rain or fog the accuracy as well as range dramatically decrease.

Hope this helps.

Here's the deal, law enforcement is trained to judge speed just the same that most out there in the world can get pretty close judging the speed of the average Joe with just plain ol' eyesight. They have been writing tickets for decades without use of radar or laser. So laser jammer or not, going 80 in a 40 should have easily netted you a major ticket or impound if the cop was really looking at you. As laser requires straight line of sight something does not really formulate here unless he was more concerned with his equipment than public safety. Or you could have been at just the right angle where he could not make a proper judgment which would make little sense as again, a cop would tag a car just to verify speeding (the cop already knows your speeding)
Now, if you got hit with a stray laser from say someone using cruise control (in a nice car) in the opposing lane and the cop was tagging the FX and did not notice you-I suppose that could also occur.
Either way you lucked out as your car could have been impounded and a 30 day suspension minimum on your license could have been handed out.

Here's the thing.

The cop was about 1,000 feet away me. I was approaching head on. No cars next to me, FX far behind me.

I got 2 8k HIDs on the front so I'm hard to miss.

There is no way a cop can judge my speed 1,000 feet away with his eyes. That's what a laser/radar is intended to do.

As far as my jammer, it has been tested on numerious occasions and more than one passenger wondered why the car behind me had a ticket even though I was the one shot at first.

And no I did not get hit with a stray cruise controlled car as I was all the way in the right line of a 3 lane road with a divider before 3 other lanes begin.

I would say, I TECHED out.

before "buying the luck" I had 2 laser tickets. One in NJ on turnpike and one in Brooklyn on Belt PKWAY.

Thanks for the luck wishes but luck has nothing to do with it.

Ok,without being there myself it is difficult to say what really happened. On another note, why did you put 8k bulbs in your car when their light output is so diminished vs stock bulbs? 8k is only for looks, not function.

Indeed. No tickets yet for me! Then again, I know where the cops hang out, so I drive appropriately.

I put 8k to get a mix of light output and looks.

I have 10k high beams if it gets too dark in the city.

I am using 6k fog lights.

As far as seeing what happened, I gave you all the info without adding miles to the story.

I am using Escort 8500 X50 blue connected to a hard wired Escort ZR3.

X50 alone netted me 2 laser tickets without saying a word.

On the bright side, I have never had a radar ticket while X50 was on the look out.

10k high beams? Might as well stick a flashlight out the window, it will give your more light. 6k is about the max and even that will lose lighting ability, but sorry, way off track. Your right, with 8k lights, everyone can see you coming.

I think you're mixing stuff up.

10k are still putting out over 2,000 lumens. Stock are putting what? not even 1k.

I do have a flash light that puts out 200 lumens in a completely dark environment it lights up 300 feet ahead.

So...I think my lights make more than enough light.

If I feel I need more, I'll upgrade to 50w HID.

You should park in front of me once and let me know if they are making enough light.

Ah no. I suggest you read up on lighting. Stock is around 3200 lumen, not 1k as you suggest. Your 10k lights are putting out considerably less light vs stock HIDs which are at around 4300k. I believe the the 8k/10k is putting out around 40-50% LESS light vs stock HIDs. Don't quote me on that exact figure but it is around that.
Generally 8k/10k is relegated to the Civic crowd (sorry, but true) .

There are many guides available on this. I once used 6500 bulbs in one of my cars and noticed the reduced output though bluer light which does nothing for me. Went with 5k lights which were about right.

Color Temperature is a measurement in Degrees Kelvin that indicates
the hue of a specific type of light source. Many people believe the misconception
that color temperature is a rating of the brightness of the bulb or HID kit.
This belief is completely false. The reality of the matter is that the higher the color
temperature, the less usable light output you will obtain.

Plenty more at a Googles reach.

thank you for that wonderful write up, I did my research.

I said my 10k are WAAAY brighter than stock. Stock were halogen

Now I went from 2 HIDs to 4 so my total light output increased.

I went up with Kalvin for color as stock is boring.

You lost considerably on the low beams which is what is used 99% of the time and gained on the high beams. How often do you drive around with your high beams on in NYC blinding opposing drivers? Plus your hi beams will turn off your 6k foglights that you mentioned you have-unless you have a bypass.
Choice is yours, just I do not see where this would benefit anyone unless they wanted to sacrifice lighting output for the added blue color. Just MO of course.

And to add, I have family in NYC (learned to drive there lyself). As slow as this car is, getting to 80 would take a long time and doing this in a 40mph zone cannot be safe. Not trying to preach as I have been known to speed, just not in traffic. Thank you.

yes...I have 4 HIDs on at any time...

And I was doing 80 on 3 empty lanes, that was basically the issue...

And getting to 80 doesn't take more than 10 seconds...so I don't see that being all that slow.

I just wasn't sure if people knew I like to smoke in the Acura flagship sedan.. therefore don't wanna draw TOO much attn to myself from the po-po. But thankfully it's got the street cred of being for 50+ old people.

And the car if fine, I'm not smoking that harmful tobacco stuff.
