Need some advice.
I found a 2006 RL with 100,000 miles and thought I had landed a good deal. Pictures however didn’t capture its true situation. I have a car that has had a rough life but no accident and clean title. Lower miles for the age but needs a lot of stuff to be right. First is the key situation I have a regular key only no smart fob and the cover/key is missing from the ignition module. A few dents and other smaller stuff and the tpms system says all but one sensor are bad. Car also smells of blunts and is missing it’s shark fin antenna.
I guess the the question is how difficult would it be to get the smart fob and programming to make that right again?
Next would it be worth investing to make the car right again or just flip it and find a less abused example?

I mean, honestly what you’ve described doesn’t sound difficult to address. Keys programmed would cost a couple hundred dollars. What concerns me is the possible lack of maintenance, you’d have to assume the owner didn’t do a timing belt and water pump. And I know a good detailed might be able to get the smell of smoke out of the car. But that’s a might. I feel like maybe for the amount of money you’d spend, maybe it’s worth looking at one that has a tick more miles and is better taken care of? I feel like poorly maintained cars cause more headache than they are worth in the long run...
i found one one in Chicago just to give you an idea...

I think I may have read the thread wrong...
I thought he wanted to flip to make money..but he just wants to sell to get a better conditioned car..
I would do that. I would sell the rough loved one to get a better conditioned car. would most likely be for a loss. but if this car is something you're going to keep for a while...

The RL use smart key technology meaning you will have to bring the car to the dealer and have the whole key fob program, there is no other way around this. I paid $260 for key fob, $50 for a blank insert and $145 for cut and programing the new key.
Shark fin antenna is relative easy to replace, you can buy a cheap used one at the junk yard or ebay.
As far as the funny smell, the only way you can clean it is remove the seat, wash the carpet and the whole interior need to be steam clean and treat with Ozone afterward.

Nope, Ozone can only do so much to remove the smell, you will have to address directly at sources of the smell, usually the floor carpet and headliner got over looked during the cleaning process. after everything clean ozone will come in and kill off any remaining smell, my TL-S still have the same smell (good smell) as the day I bought it even tho I did a lot of interior cleaning. My RL is the same way too.

OP - Sounds like you found out the perils buying a car sight unseen. Strong lesson learned. For the sharkfin I dont have one is yours ripped off? Would there not be a hole? For the transponders I might have my old ones I swapped out or at least 1 but youd have to get it programmed and buttons are all worn away.
You said clean title and carfax. Have you brought it to a trusted advisor who can go over it thoroughly and determine if its a sound foundation to resurrect? If not I would do that first, bring it and have someone determine if its truly worth it before sinking too much into it.
Not sure where you live, maybe try and flip it in Oregon or Colorado?

Mike;
My experience has been, people that smoke blunts, given the choice between more blunts or scheduled car maintenance, 99.99999% of the time buy more blunts.
