F-003: DIY: Installed Wood Steering Wheel on my 2006 RL

After owning my 2006 RL for about 2 months, I finally broke down and bought the OEM wood steering wheel for my 2006 RL. It was an early Xmas gift for myself. I was originally going to get it when buying the car, but the dealership I bought from was asking $600 for parts and labor. I decided to pass and look for a better deal later on. So "later" has finally arrived. I took some pictures while installing. The whole process took about 1.5 hours to complete and I was taking my time. I am very happy with the results and I think completes the interior now. For anyone else who is thinking of doing it yourself.... with careful reading and following directions, I would recommend it!

The original OEM steering wheel. (BEFORE)

After removing the airbag from the original steering wheel

After removing the OEM steering wheel from the steering column

After removing the steering wheel controls from the original wheel.

Reattaching the steering wheel controls to the new wood steering wheel

Placing the new wood steering wheel back on the steering column

The finished product. (AFTER)

let me be the first to congratulate you. Nice job! Did you use a special tool to remove the steering wheel?

Nice job, I did the install myself too. Used a steering wheel puller tool, worked like a charm.

Great job!! But we actually need a HOW-TO if you post it like one. You gave 0 instructions on anything. I mean, how does the airbag come off, what size sockets, how did you remove the frame.

Looks good but your DYI on a 1-10 is a 1.

PS, anyone who does this DISCONNECT THE BATTERY! You are removing the airbag and its required!

Exclamation Take it Easy

Pimpin-TL: This is the second thread I have read this week in which you have been unnecessarily antagonistic. 'vluu' did a great job of providing photo documentation of the steering wheel install. I'm presuming that when you buy the part, it comes with instruction instructions that most of us can follow. Your reminder to disconnect the battery before dealing with the airbag is useful but your rating his thread a 1/10 is not.

There are no INSTRUCTIONS on any of the pictures. Like I said, a DIY shows instructions at least. I only see Pictures.

Meteor, sorry but when I click on a DIY I expect to see instructions. Not just pictures.

1/10 for a DYI as a 1 is correct. Look at every other DIY. They have instructions.

When the dealer did mine, I was watching the whole time... they did NOT disconnect the battery.

Well, per all manuals, anytime the airbags are disconnected you are suppose to disconnect the battery because the airbag has a chance to throw a code or possibly BLOW.

Your dealer was wrong when they installed it.

I agree... but all I am saying is that the dealer didnt.
Now I can understand why they say to disconnect the battery.

You may also have to wait a certain amount of time when disconnecting the battery. Most cars today retain a bit of charge once the battery is disabled to ignite the airbags. It's meant to still supply protection in an event where you're involved in a situation where the battery is disabled but the car is still in motion and you might need airbag protection.

Dude, seriously... what's your problem? It's not an instruction manual, he's just showing what he did.

Why don't you go pimp your TL in your own forum?

Thank you, drive through.

How much is the wheel? Seeing as how the controls don't come with it and neither does the airbag I'd like to think the cost of the wheel is pretty low.

Chill out. I do not have a problem, but obviously you do. I own a RL I can pimp whereever I please.

He called it a DIY. I have my opinion and I posted it. It should be called here are step by step pictures of me replacing the steering wheel. Not a DYI.

Nice job! Did ours last year but had a slight 'issue' with the tape reel, but everything worked out. Took me about an hour to complete, if not for the tape reel, shouldve taken about 30 minutes.

FYI, you dont really need a puller. I purchased one and hoped to use it but it didnt line up properly. I then smacked the top, sides and the bottom of the wheel and gently pulled it off.

I was qouted $110 to install it by a local dealer so I guess it's about an hour of their time.

No, I had to give it a little tug... and it came off. Didn't realize I needed that tool until I had taken off the steering wheel. Btw, where can you buy that tool? Neverless... I got it off and completed my task.

Man, I wish it was "cheap". I bought it off of Ebay for $352.00 + 7.50 shipping. This was the best I could find... and it was by chance. Most of the other sellers are selling it for about $400 or more w/ shipping. I know the dealers are probably making a killing on this upgrade. Considering the dealer wanted $600 for parts and labor... and I did the install myself and got a great deal on the wood steering wheel, I saved about $240. Plus....I'm glad I did it myself..... it was very gratifying.

Mine came with instructions, but on the outside of the Acura box, it stated "NO INSTRUCTIONS INCLUDED". I think the Acura dealer I bought from included it for me. I had already downloaded directions from www.hondacuraworld.com. You can find most of the pdf instructions on that site for most RL accessories.
