Engine Explosion, totaled? *Pics Included*
2006 Acura RL ASPEC rims - 130,000 miles
Hey guys - my car was running and I got out and it just cut off. Tried cranking it over and over with no luck. The next day I tried again and a loud explosion happened and the result was below. So nasty...can't say I've ever seen a gas engine do this before.
Is this worth repairing?

seems like a big back fire.
IMO.. sure worth fixing up...perform a compression test and also confirm the TB is still on and has not jumped. if both check out, proceed to fix the issue. more than likely leaky fuel injectors..
Good luck.

not really the engine, just the intake manifold, should be fairly simple provide the rest of the engine is fine!

That's the intake manifold being blown off, right? Is there damage to the underside? What in the world would cause that? If it is just a damaged intake manifold and you can pass compression, I agree with dezal. Otherwise, I have to think an engine swap would be easiest and cheapest.

OP you dun goofed.. that's one fucking epic intake backfire.
It's rare but not unheard of (punzine). You sure you didn't spray a whole can of carb cleaner down the throttle body before starting her?
It's possible that you had a stick injector, but not likely.
The cause is simple.. built up fumes, chain reaction with spark and boom.
The root of the issue will be more difficult to figure out. First spec all the injectors, then spec the intake valves. Spec the timing and check the egr valve.
Somewhere along those lines, unburnt spray was allowed to cycle back to the IM.. yada yada yada.. kaboom!
The intake manifold is an easy replacement. You should replace all the bolts and gaskets too. IM is usually the weakest point of the chain.
But that explosion is fucking glorious. I'd check everything. I'd be real interested in the valve and timing spec.

I don't think it had time to get to the belt and valves, pistons... Pressure went upwards. my guess is those are still good.

First thing I thought was that he threw a rod, but those aren't under the IM. Obviously Joe is right about gas build up, but I don't get how.

Thats a big back fire ! dont crank it over once so ever !
Put the motor at TDC on the crank and check that your cam gears are all aligned first before doing anything else and report back !

Either that or your turbo BOV is stuck closed.
More likely, you flooded it trying to start it and the vapour settled there and ignited the next day.
Something wrong with your valves or ignition timing's a tad advanced.
It's bloody impressive, anyway.

i spy an SRI/CAI install
if you go to the dealer,$10 says they'll blame that

You can do a used engine swap for ~$3K.

I assume you're including labor in that price too, yes? I thought you can snap up a used engine for 1500ish...

way less!
i used Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market to source my used engine. found one that was going for $650. when I got to the junk yard, dude had PLENTY of J32/J35's. he let me choose the one I THOUGHT was the best conditioned.
took the engine over to my mechanic and had him install it in a week for $650 and some change for fluid, etc.
~$1300 in total.
that is if you can get a mechanic to swap it for $650.

Yeah these engines are a dime a dozen these days. There's nothing special about them either, so it's not like they are in high demand. I'm not surprised Spaceman grabbed his for well under 1000... I was thinking I could get one up here for 1500...

I Knew going in that these engines are bullet proof and wouldnt mind a 100k+ mile engine.
if I wanted one closer to the mileage on the body of the car, ~75k miles, It would have been in the $1000 price range
I couldnt Justify ~$1650+ on the swap. so, i settled for a higer mileaged engine.....which has been trouble free in the last year

As far as mileage is concerned, I wouldn't be that worried either.. the J series can take a lot of abuse before showing any issues... if decently maintained, it's all good. I'd definitely do some easy maintenance while the engine was still out, rather than battle with it later. Replace the seals now, check the engine mounts now, etc...

^yeah, mechanic swapped everything over to new-used engine.
all of my aftermarket mounts, my aftermarket throttlebody, and my painted wrinkle red valve covers.
also swapped over the new timing belt and water pump i had just put on.
he did some extras too, that he didnt have too.
I had some ghetto washer-bolt method and he replaced it with the correct length bolt

taco, theres a JDM shop in Montreal that has boatloads of acura/honda motors/trannys for great prices.
When my tranny blows ill likely fork the cash over and go 6spd, hopefully thats not for a few years though lol

Honestly, I'm not sure that 6mt swap is worth it. Plus there is a bunch of shit to wire up to make sure everything works as before... You'd be better off just buying a TL with a 6mt to begin with.
It's not that it can't be done, but there's a reason only a handful of guys have done it. And no one has done it (at least on AZ) in at least 2 years.

Yeah, I looked at buying a Type R engine from them, many years ago.
