Crankshaft bearing shell failure at 120,000?

The car was running fine and then the next day bearing knock. My question is, is it possible to remove the crankcase pan without removing the engine. I this a frequent occurrence because I have read it is a Hyundai defect, possibly a bearing manufacturer defect? The dealer said $5400 to repair and i am thining of doing myself. I m MAster Tech.

If you're referring to the debris left in the engine during Hyundai manufacturing, certainly not the same for Acura.
Could be lack of lubrication, cruddy oil, clogged passages, etc. Usually when a main or rod bearing knock is encountered, the babbitt on the bearing is probably gone and then either the crank or rod is scored and would need machining or replacement which would call for engine removal. I've never done one, but I would say that the pan will come off with the engine in the car to do the inspection, but get ready to drop it out.
