I followed the directions in the manual and the sync up did not work. Any other (easy) way to get this to work so in case I lose the little garage door opener remote I'm not screwed? thx.

most people get the "car" part right, it's the opener that needs to be setup too. if your opener has a rolling code, you'll need to press the "program" button on the opener unit/motor (it's usually in a highly visible spot and colored blue and/or purple). once it's pressed the program LED will flash on the opener unit. while this is happening (you have about thirty seconds) press the programmed home link button. give this a try.
