Auto tilt side mirrors in reverse

OK, I read the manual and also tried to search on this forum ...

I swear, for 5 months I have had my 2015 RDX, BOTH mirrors automatically tilt down when I put the car in reverse. One time the passenger side mirror didn't tilt and I was wondering if the mirror motor was broken, but the next time when I started the car and put it in reverse, both tilted down again.

This morning, I played with the L/R mirror adjust slider and since then either mirror will tilt but not both. When the slider is in the middle position, neither mirror tilts. That's what the manual says too, but I am quite certain both mirrors tilt when the slide was in the middle position this morning before I played with it.

How do I make them both tilt automatically in reverse? Was "both mirrors tilt down when slider is in the middle" actually a bug I was stuck with for 5 months? I actually like it that way, or better yet, can I choose I want both, neither, or either of the mirror to tilt?

I'm inclined to think that your car had an error previously. My car does exactly as the manual says. It's either driver or passenger mirror which tilts depending on what you select. I understand it must be nice to have the option of both tilting down.

Acura has operated this way (1 mirror tilt down at a time) since the early 2000's.

its always been 1 mirror to tilt while reversing in all of their line up.

Interesting...guess I've been using the rear view camera more and not noticing NEITHER mirror was tilting(had the switch in neutral). Tried it today and both mirrors were catchy and made nasty sounds; so I went back to 'no tilt' until I can get the dealer to look at them. Since two of us drive the RDX, I can't imagine the mirrors have been totally fixed in place all this time; but, boy, they sure sound like they haven't moved in years!

honda /acura seems to have a long time problem with the actuators.
its the mirror motor and will make a clicking noise when moving the mirror.

usually, its the lube in the gears that dry up.

remove the mirror, clean up the gears, and apply some kind of lube. re-attach mirror and will be good to go, until it dries out again

Spray some WD-40 and stick the little nozzle tube behind the mirror. Soak it and the mirror will be moving without the "click-click-click".

looks like a simple fix.
but why dont their engineers just redesign it.

ive had a number of acuras that had this problem,
so its been going on for many years.
we have had other cars in the home but only had this problem with honda acura. but its been over a number of differant generations of vehicles.

an although its a minor issue with a quick and easy fix, they really should look for a redesign that makes the problem just go away.

Ive gotten a PM from a member that wanted to know how to take off the mirrors.

I apologize since I am at work and kinda posted half the DIY and not the full thing.

here's the full DIY!

I also want to point out that this is for a 2006 Acura TL, but I believe its the same procedure for the RDX.

here is an expanded parts view of the 2013 RDX mirror

Ok guys so I looked around for a thread on anyone who repaired their mirrors to work smoothly like when the car was new. As it turns out there is alot of advice but no one posted up pictures so i thought I would document my repair. About a year ago my passenger mirror started studdering off and on. Then all the time. 2 months later my driver side followed. I heard about re-lubing by simply moving the mirror to its furthest corners and adding more grease from the sides, but in a short period of time that quick fix will come back again and again. So I decided to remove all the old grease and add new grease.

First, make sure you do not use a screw driver. It can not only scratch your paint but it can also cause a pivot point on the mirror and cause it to break. I used a panel remover.

There are self locking clips at 10, 2, 4, and 8 o'clock. Pick one corner, and once it pops off simply slide the mirror in the opposite direction and it will come off easily.

Notice the clips? There are eight (8)...four corners in pairs. Once you get one off, the rest slide out.

After it is out remove the two wires from the mirror housing. This is not entirely necessary, but I don't like to feel restricted with elbow space. If you do decide to take them out i suggest you mark them so that you put them back on the same way. I personally don't know the scematics and whether or not it is necessary, but i don't take any chances.

Remove this center #20 screw and the center cap, screw, and spring will come off. Put aside the screw and spring and clean this bad boy up. All that yellow gunk it what is making your mirror click.

It should look like this...

I used basic white lithium grease from auto zone for $3 and the final result should look something like this

After you put it all back together screw back in the spring with the screw...make sure you don't over tighten the screw. once the screw reaches the end STOP tightening. This slack alows the mirror to move around, overtighening will only cause your mirror to freeze up. After the screw is in, plug up your wires and simply snap the mirror back in place. Be very careful when doing so because mirrors don't bend! make sure you dont create an access point, use your entire hand as you push the mirror back into place. DO NOT USE YOUR FINGERS as they will cause the mirror to crack. This is a $50-60 replacement, so I would take that seriously. I did the reverse of removing it. slide in one half of the clips until they grab, then the third one, then finally push back on the fourth tabs until they click. After this you will enjoy smooth quiet reversing again...oh yeah.
Thanks for reading, thanks are appreciated.
