C.A.I. intake humming noise?
Hey Guys,
Any of you that have installed CAI, AEM or other brands, please let me know if you are getting any type of humming noise at idle or slow speed. I had a company custom make one for me months ago, and it hummed so loud at idle that I told them to keep it. If I am sitting inside the car at idle, I don't want to hear that dam noise. Now some good sound at w.o.t. is a different matter all together.
Thanks,
Kevin

Kevin, trust me the AEM is great, you can barely hear it at idle, but when you get on it, it howls!
What happened to the one you made yourself out of PVC pipe? I remember seeing that at the first Bay Area meet, did you remove it?

I have a Xephyr CAI from www.xephyrperformance.com -- At idle you cannot tell that the car has an intake on it. When you initially touch the throttle (and incidentally when you shut the car off) there is a "whoosh" sound of air, combined with the popping sound from the free-flowing exhaust. The only time you can really tell a difference is on WOT, especially above 5000 rpm when the second cam kicks in, then it sounds like a monster V8 ... hehehehe, gotta love it.

Good memory. I still have it installed along with the K&N drop in filter. It works well but of course I am wondering if there is more power to be had with the aftermarket CAI.

I thought about it when I was installing one. But I overtighten one and it broke. Seems like the humming problem comes from low quality of filter. I am going to try to close center part of the filter like K&N has and if that does not help, I will buy K&N cone filter.

Try using a K&N conical 9 inch filter element. There are several models that are between 7-9" and should give you some quiter performance..... what type of CAI/Short-Ram are you using?

With my custom setup (just removing the air box and attaching an cone filter at the end of the tube) here is very little humming sound outside. In the cabin, I can't hear it at all (air sucking noise when cold only). However, when I added an elbow to the end of the stock tube so that the filter can rest when the air box used to be, the humming noise is unbearable inside the cabin.

.
I am thinking of buying universal K&N filter. Here is it's parameters:
Small end= 89mm or 3.5"
Large end= 117mm or 4.6"
Length= 178mm or 7"
flange length= 5/8 inch
What do you think?
