Airbag recall update - November 2014

The Honda airbag recall has been updated again.

Summary:
If you were denied a replacement airbag in the past (my car wasn't included in past recalls) you can now ask for a replacement airbag free of charge.

There were some earlier reports of replacement parts being defective, so check to make sure your car is looked after (even if you had this done under an earlier recall).

Please be sure to check into this as it could save your life!

to be honest my car is nearly 14 years old and I am not sure I want to replace it

clpassenubye 11-19-2014 09:43 PM

Called two dealers and Acura and the new info hasn't filtered down to them yet.

chunky 11-20-2014 06:53 AM

Went to the Acura website and plugged in my VIN yesterday. It said that there were no recalls of any sort for my car up to date.

TheWeez 11-20-2014 11:51 AM

They didn't replace mine last time when I brought it in to have it checked. I'm kinda with YeuEmMaiMai on this one. Wonder if it's worth replacing at this point.

The fact that several people have died and been injured because of these airbags if you still driving your car I would think you would be concerned no matter how long you've owned it.

g1underground 11-20-2014 12:04 PM

Had mine replaced with the last recall, like to keep my bad luck to a minimum.

Chances they'll actually replace it rather than check and say it doesn't need replacing is minimal.

brian6speed 11-21-2014 09:49 AM

I would not trust a 14 year old airbag with my safety. Even when my 01 CL was less than 2 years old, I was in a bad accident and the airbags never deployed when they should have. I don't trust them.

I am safer in my CL with no airbags with welded in roll bar, racing buckets, and 4 to 6 point harnesses. :tomato:

Same here. I made an appointment to have the airbag replaced (passenger side only since I have the RSX airbag in the steering wheel) for my 03 CL. After sitting 10 minutes in the waiting room, the service manager came up & said there is no airbag recall for my car :what:.

So, who is right? Was NHTSA info inaccurate? Who do we believe? The car manufacturer, or the gov't?

Scottyknows007 11-21-2014 09:14 PM

I had a recall on mine that the previous owner supposedly had taken care of. I called the dealer and told them I want them replaced again.... Have an appointment for 8am tom.

The dealer told me the changes can take weeks or months to filter down to them

Surprised not more posts here, maybe it's on the TL forum. I know it's a slim chance but who wants the chance of flying shrapnel, much less an accident. I called in my vin and Acura dealer told me it needs the recall. First time I called they said just the the inflater, then I called again and the guy seemed unaware of much, and said the whole driver airbag will be replaced.

A little concerned there is no clear info, but I know the issue is swirling between Takata, the govt, and the car manufacturers.
I'm taking it in on Fri.

YeuEmMaiMai 12-03-2014 05:42 PM

still not going to take the car out of storage to take it in. If they come up with some concrete proof that every single bag is defective then I will reconsider.

Rapture 12-13-2014 05:12 PM

Sooo.... when I took my car in for the airbag recall a couple years ago, that wasn't the end of it? I haven't received any other notices yet...

heisnuts 12-14-2014 09:04 AM

As of 12/14/14, it looks like Acura added more VINs to the recall. Looks like most, if not all, 2003 CL models are included for the updated air bag inflator.

You can check your VIN at American Honda Motor Co., Inc. Divisions

Yeah.......got my notice through email Friday. No idea when they can replace it.
Concerned but not worried.

Checked again on both US & Canada Acura websites and there is no recall for my vehicle. The US website did not recognize my VIN which makes sense, since I did buy the car in Canada.
I decided to call Acura Canada to ask if some VIN's would eventually filter in to the recall. The lady on the phone assured me that all affected VIN's were now in their system, and not to worry. If anything ever were to change in the future, I would be receiving a letter in the mail.

If anything, I would think the opposite is true. The older your car is, the more I would want to replace the airbags with brand new parts. I would think that the explosives lose potency over time, etc. I think I'd be safer in a car with brand new airbags vs 14 year old airbags, shrapnel issue aside.

I had the work done about a month ago on my CL, and had them replace the drivers seatbelt under warranty while they were at it.

Oldsman71 12-16-2014 02:31 PM

Well, mine is listed. Probably should do my steering wheel swap before I take it to them.

see my previous post.....

see how the frenzy has died down? if this was as serious as you all are making it out to be, then the NHSTA would have forced the issue to cover all the cars regardless.

Truth. The gov investigates this stuff like crazy and if they'd found a reason to, they would have forced them to replace them all.

I just had this recall repair performed today (2003 CL-S 6). They (Acura dealer) had it done in less than 60 minutes.

According to the invoice, they used 0400-S5A-305; INFLATOR COMP. KIT.

This is the procedure they performed:

clpassenubye 01-15-2015 11:26 PM

Got mine done about two weeks ago.

Fifty-two months after having the first recall performed I had the second round airbag inflator recall done again today. As usual, the dealer had it done in less than 60 minutes.

I've never seen so many Acura people 'fist-bumping' and 'yo-broing' over a 2G S/C'ed CLS6. They were like, 'Bro!, we just don't see them any more'

TheWeez 04-23-2019 07:57 PM

I got a notice too. Nice to know that my potentially exploding airbag was replaced with a 2nd airbag that may explode. Time to make my appointment to have it swapped again. Too bad my normal shop can't do it, as I need to have the winter tires taken off.

whitetiger5 04-24-2019 12:11 PM

I don't think the issue is to address potential explosion or deployment of an airbag, but more the risk of metal objects fragmenting from the inflator and causing injury to the person the airbag is protecting during a crash?

Here is some info from the website:Frequently Asked Questions Updated March 29, 2019 | Honda Airbag Info
 1. Why does heat and humidity affect my airbag?
A scientific analysis announced by NHTSA on May 4, 2016 determined that the ammonium nitrate propellant used in recalled Takata airbag inflators that did not contain a moisture absorbing desiccant can degrade over time, particularly when exposed to extended periods (years) of high heat and absolute humidity, as is typical in many southern U.S. states. This propellant degradation may cause the airbag inflator to rupture if the airbag deploys in a crash.
