335is breaks into the 11's on stock run flats

One of the guys has broken into the 11 second bracket on stock run flats which is pretty amazing since the tires suck. First car we know about into the 11's & better then a few on better rubber including nito 555. I have slightly oversized 265X30X19 Conti DW with no downpipes & he is a good 6 tenths faster with an equal or slightly better 60ft time. Very impressive for a comfortable street car. The car is FBO no meth running 93 octane fuel.

I am beta testing the new JB4 G5 board & hope it will give me a little more grunt without going to downpipes which would kill any chance of passing the state emissions inspection (no cats) & would cause big time grief at the dealer on any warrantee work.

Thanks but it wasn't me, I am at 12.5/114 on the normal JB4 with 375whp @ 15psi. Of the four 335is guys who post regularly I am the slowest & with the least modifications (tune – FMIC). BuraQ is FBO & between me & the 11 second car at 12 flat with another at 12.3. Might pickup another few tenths but don’t expect to get into the 11’s since I will not be adding downpipes.

Will not be running at Rockingham till the JB4/G5-ISO board beta testing is done & its a production version so don’t think I will see any new times till spring. This last week we have modified the boards with the removal of two diodes, gone through 4 software updates & a lot of basic setting changes.

Terry has made a major change to the technology in that the board no longer spoofs the factory ecu for boost management & has 5X the processing power with 2X the memory of the original JB4. All boost control with the G5 is on the board itself & more control setting changes have been moved to the steering wheel buttons from the former lap top only input. This means you can change a lot of the settings on the fly to adjust to different conditions.

All I can say is all things equal moving up to 18psi the new board is stronger, smoother then the current version & has a really good E85 capability added in. I will dyno it when things slow down a bit from the current software change rate hopefully in November.

12.5 @ 114 is still nothing to sneeze at. It's enough to put an unsuspecting "pick your model" SRT, Camaro SS or even a stockish 5.0 in its place. I'd de-badge the car and go prowling for the aforementioned muscle cars.

I see a guy my age in my neighborhood with and is.
i'm not sure if he's done anything to it; but the exhaust sounds sick when he passes my house.

The IS exhaust is a more aggressive then the stock but version but not as much as the optional BMW Performance Exhaust.

That being said they are both all noise & not worth more then 7-10CHPat top end. I do love the sound of the IS on a cold morning & use the JB4 to hold the internal flap open all the time.

Testing of the new G5 JB4 board is coming along very well. The basic G5 board which runs on the normal JB4 software is now being used in all the newly shipped JB4's.

The G5-ISO version is still being tested & we are up to the 14th beta software iteration. The attached log is off a test run I did this morning. The boost held at 17psi+ all the way to my normal shift point. The air fuel ratio is dead on for the entire run & no ignition lead is being pulled due to knock or fuel quality issues.

17psi with only an aftermarket FMIC & a 93/100 octane mix is a long way from the stock 335is 10psi or the 335i 8psi. Looking foward to dyno testing, my best on the original JB4 board was 375whp on the same fuel FMIC combo with boost in the 15psi range.

There's a guy here in Kansas City with a 335X sedan with the typical bolt-ons claiming 11.6s@118mph and 1.7 60 foots. Apparently a few people have seen him run at Heartland Park Topeka too.

In Drag Times the first 50 335's listed are in the 11's. With a Tune, CAI, FMIC, Downpipes & Meth Injection its pretty much expected to run that quick/fast. A lot of cars without meth but running an 91-93+E85 mix will also run in the 11's.

The cost of the mods to get from pure stock to 11 seconds can be about $2K

There would be no greif at the dealer for warrantee work (or there shouldn't be) but the emissions are a bitch. I was gonna register my car in Alabama so I didn't have to worry about it but it's still in Georgia so I had to put the cats back on this past time.

Hmmm....I've heard of many instances where BMW has denied powertrain warranty work on modded 335i's. I personnally know two BMW techs from Baron BMW - Kansas City and they are specifically required to look for indications of motor/ECU tampering when 335s come in with motor/drivetrain issues. They swear up and down even easily removable mods like JB4 "Juice Box" leave signatures in the ECM parameters. Modded 335s are extremely common and BMW is well aware of it and they don't want to be paying for someone's racing program.

Have to disagree with you on that. The sites that support the various tuners have very little actually traffic about warranty issues with the piggy backs JB4 & Proceed even though JB alone has over 10K installed units. Flash tunes like Dinan & Cobb are another matter although Cobb does have the ability to be reflashed back to stock.

If the units are removed prior to service it would take opening a PUMA case & referring the issue to the techs in Germany with specialized software that can go deeper into the ECU then the dealers can to determine if it was ever tuned. A service tech can open the coffin & look to see if a piggy back is in there but if its gone there is nothing to see.

Some guys leave them installed, I do, & switch to a pass through map that allows the dealer diagnostic software to do its normal thing including updating the ECU with current factory enhancements.

BTW with the last G5/ISO software patch my inside Raleigh mpg is up to 22+ mpg on the last full tank of gas. I hope the whp is also up.

Isn't a Dinan reflash BMW approved/supported anyway?

Yes & No. Its installed by a number of BMW dealers but is not approved by BMWUSA. The Dinan warranty is issued by Dinan & does not replace the factory warranty, it covers what BMW will not because of the tune.

A car with a Dinan package is VIN tagged & cannot be CPO'd reducing the cars value. Finally its a big looser in performance gains. Its top rated Stage III with many thousands of dollars in "required" options is not much of a horsepower producer.

They advertise 395 horsepower but do not tell you its crank horsepower compared to wheel horsepower like all the other tuners use. If my car were rated the same way Dinan is it would be producing 430 horsepower for about the 1/2 the cost of a Dinan CAI alone.

It's my understanding that it's "accepted" by BMW, but that BMW warranty is voided and Dinan's warranty (though much shorter) would take over.

For cars under BMW coverage Dinan matches the term & millage of the factory. The factory warranty is still active & Dinan picks up anything BMW refuses to cover. For cars out of warranty Dinan warranties its own stuff for 2 years & unlimited millage.

Actually its a nice plan just horribly expensive for what you actually get.
