2005 TL 5AT vs 99 Maxima SE 5MT

Not going to lie, I was blown away. I own a 2009 Slowbaru Impreza, it's a 5 speed. I have a buddy who use to own an MT Slowbaru and wanted to trade his TL for 24 hours so he can have some fun driving manual.

Anyways, so I took his TL for the time being and I was heading with BP for some Subway, on my way there I see a car coming up behind me and then goes to the right to pass me, as I see him pass me doing maybe 45mph in 35 zone I get on it a little and I get it up to maybe 80, almost catching him and then I shut it down for safety reasons.

We keep going up and hit a red light together, I was supposed to turn left to get to BP but the dude rolled down his window and wanted to go from a dig. So I decided to eff it and go for it, I wanted to see what kind of balls the TL had.

Mind you, my tank was full, I had my future wife sitting in passangers seat and I didn't use sport mode. So I gunned it as did he, were dead even all of first gear, as it shifts into second I pull a half car length on him. We stay that we in till 3rd before I pull a 1/4 of a car on him so he's at like my rear qp. As soon as the TL shifts into that horrible dreaded 4th gear wall at around 100 something, he walks away from me with no problem, I was damn shocked considering this was an older Maxima not even the 200x ones with the 3.5L mid 200 hp V6's. I was kind of upset, but didn't care much since it wasn't my car, I did want a TL but now...not so much. Maybe a 6speed TL-S.

I told him about the race, he also raced on my Subaru haha, said he beat an older V6 Mustang :P.

Oh and I raced his TL on my Slowbaru the next day, he put a bus length or so on me before 100mph.

Overall- I hate the 4th gear TL has, but I would probably enjoy owning one if it was the sport model and 6 speed, otherwise I wouldn't ever buy one.

Considerable difference between the two cars. I had a 5AT loaner for a few days and you don't even need an overly sensitive butt-dyno to experience the difference. Stock to stock, there's a solid 4-5 mph trap speed difference, which is significant. Don't be turned off from the TL; it's a great car for the money and the performance potential, while costly on a dollar per hp gained basis and somewhat inhibited by the inherent limitations of FWD, is expanding rapidly.

I probably won't stray from the TL, I always loved that car, in my mind it's the perfect visually designed car, so damn sexy. I just won't settle for a base lol.

Nice run. Those 95-99 Maxima 5spds are sleepers. Lots of low and mid range torque. They are capable of pulling off high 14's with traps in the very low 90's with a perfect launch and great driver. Easily a low 15 second car with a decent driver.

This. My 96 5MT did 14.6s@96mph with a y-pipe and modified stock intake. It did 14.3s@100mp with a revised intake manifold, ECU flash, y-pipe, and modded stock intake. My 14.3s were fairly slow compared to what many are seeing with the same combo (13.9-14.1@101mph). My track sucks.

Yea they can be quick. I ran one back in the day when I had I/Jpipe and he had I/Exhaust and was talking smack, albeit friendly smack. Needless to say I raped him both times from a dig. He has since done Ypipe and Idk what else but I've yet to run him.

Damn Nissans and their torque, even in the 3.0L. They have so many more options than we do.

I'd do it. Then put the 3.5L in for about 2.5-3K and have a low 13 second DD for 5K

Haha nice, I might actually buy it, I will have to test drive it and see. I need a DD ASAP because I cannot keep putting miles on Subaru, I need to sell it.

Why do you need to sell the Subie, if you don't mind me asking?

And yeah, I've heard a lot about the dreaded 4th gear. I'm sure you would have walked him even with just the 6MT non-S.

Not in the Honda/Acura color code, but the actually factory name for the color is Lighting Red, lol.

I want to sell the Subaru because I bought it lightly hit for a cheap price, clean title. I bought her like 3 months ago with only 5.8k miles, now it has over 13k...ugh.

(w/6MT preferably) ....keep it totally stock in appearance and it becomes a SERIOUS sleeper.
