Rear Main Oil Seal Leak

Well, it's happened. Can someone confirm that the shop time for this job is 4-5 hours or better yet scan the manual pages?

Anything else I should get repaired while the engine and tranny are out of the vehicle?

05 TL w/ 191k miles - first owner.

Is the rear main seal the same as the tranmission side crank shaft seal?

If yes, then it's only removing the auto transmission. IMO I'd get the trans checked out while it's out, perhaps rebuilt. I'd also do new transmission mounts and motor mounts. Check out all the rubber boots and bushings (Lower Control Arm esp)!

I'd also do the Waterbelt/Timing belt service done too at the same time with new plugs, spark plug tube seals, new front main seal and probably a new thermostat. If you are thinking about any engine mods like gaskets, spacers, manifold, etc, now would be a great time to add it on! Also with 191K on the car, I'd suggest new 02 sensors as they will probably need replacing soon along with the catalysts.

Change your pcv valve and clean the area where it leaks
Drive it and recheck for leaks .

Good luck went thru this about a month ago.. Really painful but took care of the leak..

Things to change clutch kit but you state "slushbox" so I assume you are an automatic.. I only took care of the seal..

dealer price for this job is around $1100, some shop will do this cheap as $600.

AJ- I don't think it's the same thing. However, I'm not sure. Thanks for the suggestions.

If you don't mind, how much did you pay and did you get it done at the dealer?

Damn Joe, sorry to hear, just before hitting 200K!

El Ban did his own rear main seal at home I believe. Check his progress thread below.

Looks like the rear main seal is the transmission side seal like I posted above, would you like the FSM scan's of the trans removal and related steps?

I think you are right AJ. No, it's ok. Thanks though.

Acutech (former AZ vendor) quoted me $600 for the job. Conrad explained everything on the phone. I'm going to have them do the job along with some other things while the tranny is out.

Sorry to bump up an old thread ggesq. Did you ever get it replace? I am assuming Acutech is near Florida?

I am getting quotes of $1200-2000 ONLY in my area. Kinda depressing since I could nearly double that and buy a used TL.

No worries, the problem actually corrected itself. I remember reading some posts by IHC having the same issue and the problem resolving itself with his car as well. Acutech is in FL on the east coast.

edit- champ- read this thread.

Shit son.. I was going to come up in here and be like.. leaky rear main seal for several years here.. slowly waiting for her to correct herself.
For real though.. no rust mom!
PCV valve is a good suggestion.

Champ.. it's a $3 seal.. the work is removing the transmission. If you have a lift or at least the means, you could DIY. IMO, $1200 is too much labor cost.
Depending how bad it is, you could just say eff it. Few drops a day won't hurt anyone. Just stay on top of your trans fluid changes.
