Turns out, LUK tech support was right! I should have changed the flywheel when I last did a clutch at 180K miles The whole problem was flywheel slippage. It has to do with the way these dual-mass flywheels are designed. Turns out, the flywheel took out the clutch.

WHEN IT COMES TIME TO REPLACE THE CLUTCH, PUT A NEW FLYWHEEL IN TOO! The LUK (OEM) flywheel is only $209 from Rockauto, so why take a chance?
