7 inch Tablet Nav and Internet Mod

Here is a pic of my dash with an android tablet in nav:

Android Home Screen with Go Launcher EX:

Car Home Ultra app (makes screen look like GPS)

I converted a non-nav dashboard to a nav dashboard and inserted a 7 inch android tablet (original galaxy tab) in the nav screen area. It fits perfectly and the graphics are very nice. I will post before and after pics below with what I did.

It is an awesome GPS solution. There are plenty of GPS enabled tablets and I just downloaded a GPS program that you can use offline without a data connection and you have a great 7 inch screen.

And it is a cool way to get internet in your car if you have a phone with a data plan. You can wirelessly tether your phone to the tablet for an internet connection.

this is what my dash looked like before (I also painted marble panels black to update the car)

Here is a pic of what the standard gps unit looks like (screen is puny compared to 7 inches of tablet)

Nice looks great, although the only prob i see is if you ever need to remove the tablet. Nice mod nonetheless

steps

Ingredients:
1.7 inch tablet - bought used $150 (any 7 inch should fit perfectly just make sure it has navigation. I think most of them do.)
2.w/ nav dash bezel - bought on ebay about $30 (make sure hazard button included)
3.w/ nav climate - bought control strip about $30
4.head unit with audio in line

Steps:
1.Sand the 6 nubs on the inside of the dash bezel flat so the tablet will lie flat

2.Cut out a square piece of felt to line the inside of the bezel so the tablet screen will not be scratched.

3.create brace to hold tablet to bezel. I am not so handy so I outsourced this to my body shop. They created this metal back lined with felt and secured with bolts

You can see the bolts were molded to the plastic with some type of molding putty

4.Once Tablet secured wire the 3.5mm headset on the tablet to the audio in on your headunit (I had a rear audio in on my headunit)

5.Wire the tablet charging cable to a 12v source on your car.

6.Automate tablet using app tasker:
When car on: turn on screen, wifi, gps, disable screen timeout
When car turned off: set screen timeout to 7 seconds (and wifi and gps will turn off)

7.Remap search button on the front of the tablet to act as a power button in case power needs to be turned on directly in the future without having to take off the dash. (I'm not sure exactly how to do this but will post specifics later)
*or you could create a small hole or button in the dash to access the power button.

For some reason i honestly thought the shop could've made a better bracket for the tablet. Looks fairly easy to do but i prob wont do it anytime soon, a regular indash where my stock radio would go is fine for me

its solid and provides a nice secure fit for the tablet and thats all that was needed. It could have been prettier but no one sees it since it is behind the dash.

Difficulty level was not hard. I just followed a video on you tube removing the dash bezel and disconnecting wire clips. (they are easy to reattach)

then it was kind of tedious removing screws for center console to access stereo where new climate control is secured to.
there was a post in here I followed for that.

OMG. I want to do this.

If I send you a navi bezel, think you could do the same mod for me? I have the same tablet. Would pay good money.

Got some innovative members here nowadays. Great job.

^^^ if im not mistaken, the fan speed can be controlled somewhat with temp. (i remember this b/c i never used the fan buttons in my 99)

if the temperature is set well below the air in the cab it will blow faster, if the temp is set closer to the cabin air temp, it will slow. (all on the auto setting)

its also like this in my accord.

Yea I wondered that too. Fan speed and where the air blows from. These both appeared on the factory nav screen, correct? Any way to make it output to the tablet for a read out?? Seems pretty hard just thinking about it. Making 2002 tech work w 2012.

No, the functions on the AC screen of the navi are lost. There is no way to apply that to the tablet.

Don't misunderstand this mod. The tablet is in no way talking to the car. It's basically just like duct taping the tablet onto the dash, and plugging in a power connector.

the only non-nav climate control functionality I lost was the knob that controlled the blow speed. It now works as if you set it to auto on the previous knob. I just set it to the temperature I want and if it is too cold I adjust it up or turn it off.
I was willing to lose that function for the cleaner look of having everything on one strip of dials.

You also can't turn the actual AC compressor on/off without turning off the fan also.

None the less, a good mod

What kind of signal does the climate control output to the nav screen (w factory nav) to control the display? Is it a video signal? I'm sure there has to be a way to convert it to some sort of display-able signal with a little work. Maybe I'm wrong though.

No way in hell to connect the data signal. The problem isn't the car wiring, it's the tablet's software. You would have to code you're own program.

It would be easier to just redesign the entire navi.

rockstar is right. the fan speed auto adjusts. I actually prefer how the ac works now. If it is hot in car and I turn on ac to 65 it blows hard. If it is close to 65 already it is less noticeable. All I do now is set temp.

That's because 65 is the low setting. It no longer is in any auto mode, it just blasts at maximum force. Same with 90, which is max heat.

Anywhere in between there is auto.

Fan speed is not the only thing you lost control of. A/C on/off is lost, along with the selection of vents.

^^^

i am doing the diet mod and if you remove the AC controls you loose FULL control of the AC....in order to stop the blower from blowing at max and at a temperature it decides, i took off the AC fuse from the fuse box under the hood....this way it stops it from blowing everything....

I havent turned on the AC in over a year and hence it suites my needs, if i dont use the AC for this summer/winter, it comes out.....

I personally hate the full auto feature. I am kinda looking into a mod similar to this now and am going to try to integrate the features that are missing to make the system work like it should

Cool. Post a thread on that with pics and put the link here. I like the 5" galaxy note and was thinking about creating a dock for the note in nav screen area but wanted a bigger screen. Here is a pic of the note in the nav panel for the size reference:

ok i know this isnt exactly on topic but i need help please, i have a 99 model with nav already, i bought this car recently with trans shot and looking to repair it( i know bad idea right well back in july i had another 99 tl non nav that was my pride and joy till i rolled it 5 times and well just felt like the car saved my life if i could post pics u could swear nobody made it out so thats why i bought another one), while i save up the money for the trans i need help with my cluster panel all codes are popping up while car is running, check engine, maint req, abs, srs, etc... cept seatbelt, i was told by seller reason for this is cause nav was stolen out of unit although from inspection doesnt really look like so as the bezel wasnt broken and no screws hold plastic also hdd was removed from trunk with eaze, well i bought a navi from junkyard from a 02 model and tried to put it in but i realized the wires were cut from 99 model so i went back and cut the main harness wire to the nav than returned home to find not all colors match although there are a total of 16 wires on each model, tried wiring to the best i could without any luck of cluster fix or nav turning on( maybe need the hdd????) anyways i could care less about the nav i want the cluster fixed my double din radio has nav, any ideas how to fix this?? if this is the reason than im sure others have had this issue when removing nav??? please help tks, btw nice install i like to custom everything too will most like be doin this also, do u have power cord to tab? i would think so since u wouldnt be removing it tks again if u can help with the cluster panel situation, other than codes popping up all other gauges work tks again this site is awesome

Here is my setup, I went with a Galaxy Tab 2, WiFi only version. I also run car home ultra for a home screen, but I also made a splash screen that looks stock when first loading up. Also i'm running tasker to allow automation ( loading up when key is turned on, and shutting screen back off when car is shut off). Also one more is torque, it allows you to setup custom gauges to monitor engine vitals and even check and clear engine codes.

wb01a(sorry if i misspelled)

did ur instrument cluster mess up when u took out ur nav? for some reason my cluster codes are popping up, abs, srs, tcs, main req, check eng... was wondering if u got any idea? the previous owner said the reason why they messed up was cause the nav was stolen, i found one at the junkyard from a 02,mines a 99 but all the wires were the same, anyways i hooked it up and it didnt work, after thinking i looked at the side panel fuses and the nav fuse was busted so i replaced it and bing it turned on although it says the dvd disk is missing or its hdd is gone which is true cause i also got the hdd from the 02 but its all jacked up looks like someone stuck a screwdriver in to get the hdd out and dvd out well it obviously didnt fix the cluster problems any ideas???? please it would be appreciated

your navi isn't tied into the gauges in the way that it could cause those lights to be on. It only shares the signal wire for vss with the cluster. The cluster wont change even with the entire navi drive & screen removed. You may have multiple problems or some bad wiring to the cluster .I would take the time to go see what the check engine code is first ( easiset for somebody to pull for free). How does the car drive with all those lights on?

How did you hardwire into 12v power? Also, if you add an aftermarket head unit that had USB ports, could you plug the tablet into that??
