Hello all,

I took my intake resonator out today...it was a suggestion from an acura tech guy I know. Thought I'd share my opinion.

I can say that it's easy to do...just go ahead and take the WHOLE front bumper off. For some reason I was trying to cut corners and only remove the driver side enough to squeeze into, but you need to be able to really get in there to jiggle the resonator out. 3 bolts are all that hold it.

I can say that when driving slowly, I noticed an immediate improvement in acceleration...it always felt like the car was trying to suck in breathe to get going, at low rpms. Now it feels like it's much more free flowing. When I punch it and it hits Vtec...VERY nice improvement. Takes off faster and the sound is much more aggressive than the toned down sound it used to have. I'm looking at better MPG, but I'll have to keep you guys posted about that. As far as the inlet in relation to where it used to be, it's about the same height so you'd have to be 1/2 door deep in water to have any issue.

NOTE: I already had a K&N drop in filter in it.

I only do things to the car that I can easily reverse so don't be afraid to see if it's something you'd like. I'm happy with it so far.

 

Nice, I was reading the DIY on this and was really thinking about it, I was to afraid of a CAI. And 3 bolts eh, spring break is coming I will have something to do. Did you manage to get any pics?

 

If you take off the bumper all at once and then take off the 3 bolts...I see this taking an hour, at most.

damn right...i never understood how people throw away or sell stock parts when they change something. I like to be able to bring it back for trade in, or to sell.

 

Smart man. This is the way to do it.

 

Most people probably do it to offset the cost of the new parts, but I'm in the camp that always keeps the stock stuff. I have a small parts inventory sitting in the basement, including a full exhaust system. When I do finally have to get rid of this car, all the stock stuff goes back on and hopefully there'll still be some resale value in the aftermarket stuff.

Rockstar.....with the resonater delete, is your inlet just the bottom of the airbox (where the filter is) now? I am actually considering removing my CAI and putting the stock intake back in just to get rid of the annoying whistle.

 

Yes sir. With the bumper off...looking up into the inlet I can see the bottom of my air filter. According to the Acura tech (friend of a friend), that's the way it should be. I got a little better gas mileage this morning on the highway. I am happy with it so far, for sure. Much more of a pleasure to drive.

 

I will be doing this, this weekend. Gotta take my front bumper off anyways to install my front A-Spec lip. Might as well.


Notice any difference w/ the K&N Drop in?

 

I wonder if this is the same process for a V6 Accord?

 

you dont NEED to take the front off for the install. It might be easier maybe, but I didnt. good luck!

 

Might switch out my AEM when I do my A-spec install. Other than the K&N drop-in (which I still have from before the CAI), are there other "high-flow" air filters that are recommended?

I've never had a problem with the K&N before, just don't really feel like using oiled filters anymore.

 

Well...I didn't feel a huge difference with the K&N, but then again, I did that as soon as I bought the car.

Feels better to me...give it a shot and see what you think!

 

I did this mod this morning..I gotta say, definately feel a diffrence(w/K&N drop in filter).
When you gas it the car accelerate a bit quicker, and RPM picks up faster. I dont know about MPG...

I recently changed out my engine oil and tranny oil(GM Friction Modified) too. Gotta love that GM tranny fluid btw. Feel like a brand new car

GOD was it a pain in the ass taking the bumper off for the first time..I was having a hard time trying to figure out how to get the bumper loose. I didnt want to yank it and rip the whole shit out

Rockstar, did u take out the tube with the big o clunk on the bottom? or are u supose to leave it on? I just unbolted the other half of the tube that went up around to the other side.

 

I actually took EVERYTHING out...bolts and all tubing. I left the little plastic cover up in front of the battery just so the dealership won't notice anything's missing. But it's all gone from under the stock airbox back.

Yes, the bumper was a bitch to get off for the first time. The clips in front of the headlight were really hard...I had to pry it like I stole it to get it to pop out. Then reinstalling it I noticed I'm missing the passenger side bumper support. I looked everwhere..that's a huge piece to lose. It goes back in fine but doesn't line up with the light perfectly...I'm guessing it was lost when the aspec was installed at the dealership 5 years ago! .

Anyway...glad someone else gave it a try and liked it. We seem to have similar summaries of the difference with it removed. I accidentally started another thread and on that one other members bashed the shit out of me saying it doesn't do anything and that the thread was useless. Assholes. Kinda makes you not want to share.

I see... I thought it might still suck in hot air since its still somewhat in the engine bay.

 

Has anyone tried this with a short ram setup?

 

It's not because it's getting cold air that I think it improves anything...it's because there's less restriction of air coming in period.

 

i had mine done before you all even posted it on here. i agree with everyone.... i love it. i have K&N drop in too and doing all of this works as well as spending a few hundred for a CAI

I did this a year ago out of boredum, cheap and great freebee mod, and yess theres a difference in feel/slight incease in power and throttle response. (IMO)

I would highly reccommend leaving that stock snorkel tube just above the Z or 7 air chamber ON, it drastically improves acceleration if you modify and leave it on. Taking out everyting like the (after) picture will incease the sounds/ hp butt dyno etc. especially on a cool dark night, but on a HOT day yes it did show alot of hesitation during acceleration. It definately sucks in hot air, drives like ass at low rpm. I'm no car specialist but I did this too, put back on took it off etc. about 5-6 times just to be sure. I have (OCD) I think. lol.

The way I'm describing is win win, no heat soak, almost ram air, and I don't having to worry about heavy RAIN. GL.

 

UPDATE:

So I was bored after work and decided to take off my bumper again..(2nd time not so bad). I had bought this laundry machine foil ring tubing at home depot which I used to customized a intake for my old 93 integra.
I left the tube with the little box on the bottom as u can see in pic #1. Some of u guys took it off so that the hole of the intake is directly under the stock filter box.

So I wanted to take out the stock tube because I can tell it still restricted alot of air. I reused the rubber neck that connect from the stock intake hole to the tube and stuffed the foil ring right under there. It fits perfectly







I took it for a test drive and it was louder, engine seems to breathe alot easier..and still cold air.
I hope this way it would not rob my power from all the hot air in the engine bay. Foil heats up quick as well as it cools down. I guess u can call this something like like a stock CAI

yea its ghetto but it works really well! Dont feel any lost in power even after driving for a while. And I dont have to worry about it flying around..its holds sturdy by itself.

 

Way to be innovative. Hey...if you don't see it...it ain't ghetto. I left the opening alone below the filter. I'm not that concerned with the air temp. Maybe one day I'll give this a shot.

BTW...what rims are those? Very nice and classy.

Acura's 17" 15 spokes chrome optional rims..it came with chrome center caps but someone jacked mine

 

Dude...I really thought they would be at least 18's...good job on spokes that go to the edge of the rim. Very nice!
I like the new 19" SH-AWD TL rims...I wonder what those would look like on a 3 G.

If the streets around your work flood like around my office, ie about half way up the wheel, a traditional CAI is out. Last spring I was thankful I did this instead of an AEM cause cars were barreling through a flooded street causing a small tide as they drove by. It would have definitely fully submerged the AEM filter if I had one.

I think this mod MIGHT be cheaper. I had a V2 on my RSX-S, but I felt like it lost a little pull in the torque department (if you can even use that word)...as far as acceleration in the lower band. It sounded AMAZING though!

 

it would be sweet if someone could do a writeup on how to take the silencer out without taking the bumper off

Don't be lazy! Take off the bumper and do it the right way. It literally takes 10 minutes tops to take the bumper off...
