I didn't take of the bumper I just removed the wheel and took out the clips under the bumper and under the fender covers. It took me about 40 mins to do everything.

Yea exactly haha. He even cut it off at that down pipe exactly like I was going to do! I'm kind of curious to hear how the car sounds stock since apparently mine was never that way!

Edit: Yeah it's cut right at that tube that connects to the resonator chamber, so it's essentially a CAI

I did this mod the other day. It does sound similar to a CAI just a little bit quieter (try in under low bridges haha as it resonates nice).
I had no luck removing that pipe that connects to the resonator but like others mentioned, yes it seems riveted on. I have it all removed just before the air filter box.
Bumper removal was a learning experience but everything is all good now. Haven't had enough time to see the mpg result but it does seem to pull a bit better at higher rpm's.

Honestly? It might seem like a "go between" solution to getting a CAI, but is that really going to make difference? I is the air going to 'flow' better because the tube is smoother or what? I mean this thing is still drawing air from the same place without the restricted resonator right? Does the rubbing hosing cause that much turbulence? B/c if the difference is very little, can the CAI really just be relegated to an aesthetic mod? Some one get this thing on a dyno! haha

This would be a cheaper alternative if you already have a drop-in filter. By removing the stock resonator tube, it would shorten the air traveling through the filter and into the motor.
When you remove the resonator, the front hole of the stock intake is still in the engine bay. After driving a while, the motor start sucking in hot air.

So what we're trying to do is create a bigger, and/or shorter tube to suck in cold air outside the engine bay. What u created is a customized cold air intake while using the K&N drop-in filter.

I tend to think that this empty space behind the bumper (where the resonator was removed) is filled with cold air coming in from the vent in bottom of the bumper anyway...when moving forward that air has nowhere to go but into that little hole in the bottom of the intake.

Air takes the path of least resistance...the hot engine bay air would have to actually be displacing the cooler air being forced into that cavity to make into the intake. Almost works like a giant air funnel diverter feeding the intake.

This does not hold true sitting on I-95 at 1pm, of course, but then again, how cool would that air be while sitting on hot pavement with a "cold" air intake anyway.

I like the hole as far away from water as possible...

It has been over a week since I removed my intake resonator up to the airfilter box. I have to mention that I also changed the oil to 5w30 fully synthetic oil at the same time as that might have impacted a bit on the results as well.
Usually in the summer my mileage info reads 12-13 L/100km and winter time 13-14 on average with 90% of that city driving.

Aside from the minor feeling of more power my mileage displays 10-11 L/100km in the city and 8-9 L/100km when I am on the highway.
Lately though I have been driving conservatively(not flooring it except 2-3 times per tank) and with mixed driving in the city and on the highway I have managed an average of 9 L/100km....90% city.

^ That's what I thought initially, but after rereading it I think he's speaking in terms of Liters/100 Km... (he's from Canada). So if Liters are going down per 100 Km.. he's using LESS gas for every 100km... (I think) ha!

yes sorry thats it, either way that translates to 26mpg- 29.4mpg on the highway and 21.4 mpg- 23.5 mpg city. Overall gas mileage up by 3mpg (11L/100km vs 13L/100km before)...

Oh...GOOD STUFF!! Congrats...that's worth the "free" mod to begin with. I'm thinking you get better mileage with cooler air. Down here in S.FLorida...I get 18/22 and 26 highway only.

You can try...I did...but once I was done I realized I should have taken off the bumper to begin with. GL trying to get the resonator off with the bumper on.

Trust me... taking off the bumper will make things go a lot smoother. You're gonna spend more time trying to figure out a shortcut than just taking off the bumper and doing it right.

K & N is the brand...it's a popular mesh/cloth filter rather than paper...it's not cheap but it's meant to last the life of the car and be able to be cleaned rather than replaced AND let's in a LOT more air!

you'll have to search for that in the 3G garage...it's at the top.

about the K&N drop in, it's fine and works for me...a conical style will allow more air through, I believe.

has anyone ever tried to put a cone filter on the end of the plastic hose/tubing sticking out from the throttle body? by the looks of it, it looks like you can fit an AEM or skinner type of cone filter on it? wanna try it but if someone already did this and it don't work let me know so i don't waste my time and money
