I recently (slightly over a month ago) bought an 06 TL in PA from a private party. I registered it a few days later in NYC and I only paid the registration fee, which was around $150. I was not charged sales tax on the car, yet I remember filling out the bill of sale and that the tax was ~$977. Any thoughts?

I'm not complaining of course, just wondering if maybe I did something wrong?

 

I think you suppose to pay the taxes since you register in NYC, not sure what happened.

 

From what I remember you don't pay the taxes to the individual you purchased the car from, you pay it to the DMV based off the sale price when you register the vehicle.

 

You scored BIG TIME since if you were able to register the car in NYC and didn't pay the tax, you're home free. Unless you're claiming it's a family transaction, they either use the figure from the bill of sale....and if it looks suspicious, they check the book value. So if you have the reg., you're done.
