New Egypt, Jackson, and Freehold come to mind. They are with in 25min north of the base(s). Freehold is the farthest north, about 20-25min. Closer to NYC and it's a quick train ride back up to the city. I think you have to go to the Matawan/Aberdeen train station.
I'm more familiar with Freehold/Jackson. Both areas have shopping/outlet malls, places to eat, a lot of things to do esp. 6 Flags great adventure that's in Jackson. Very nice areas.
From what I've seen, Ft. Dix and McGuire AFB are nice. The base is huge and the PX/BX - Commissary are pretty damn big.

I 100% agree with him. It's beautiful down there. My sister and her husband live in Cream Ridge, which is horse country. Lots of open space and whatnot to do with it what you please.

Are you looking to rent or buy? Do you mind if I ask what your price range is?
Cream Ridge is beautiful but you might have a coronary if you see the sticker price.

even better yet you might be best moving into PA right next to the PA jersey border. houses are much cheaper there. the drive won't be 20-30 minutes, but i would check out the property around there anyway.. the price difference in housing might sway your decision..
in addition, PA and NJ have a clause where you can live in one and work in the other, and only pay state tax to the state you live in. many other states (like NJ and NY) make you pay tax for BOTH states. OUCH!
