I have been thinking about getting one since my house was burglarized about a month ago. I am new to this, what is the process?

As long as you aren't a felon, you shouldn't having a problem obtaining one. I'd suggest a shotgun for home security. A simple mossberg from Big5 will do the trick.

I believe shotguns just require a waiting period. Handguns require a class and waiting period. Hit up Reed's in Santa Clara. They can give you the lowdown. 408-970-9870

Depends on the caliber you want. I bought this last year for $500 at a Big 5 by my house.

 

Just go to a gun show, then there is no process besides paying.

yup, simple 12 gauge will work..oftentimes, just hearing the round being chambered is enough to freeze people in their tracks...LOL
