Moving to Boston

Hey guys :waves: ,

I am considering a job opportunity in Boston, and would like some input on where to live and anything else I would need to know about Mass/RI/NH. My work would be split between Boston, Providence, and Stamford. Any and all advice is appreciated.

Buy an ice-scraper, a snow shovel, and lots of warm clothing because it is fucking cold up here. Also, expect to pay substantially more than you are now for similarly sized accommodations so you may want to think about downsizing your lifestyle.

If you're going to be splitting time between Boston, Providence, and Stamford, find a place to live along the Amtrak line and you'll be able to commute between the three locations by train with relative ease as all three have stations.

Like he said. Cold, snow, high cost of living. Wait a minute, why do I live in the Boston area? I guess. My rent and car insurance doubled when I moved here. The yearly excise tax on your car is ridiculous .

On the bright side, the quality of life and job market are pretty good. Will you be spending equal time between the 3 locations? If that is the case, then RI seems more centrally located.

Absolutely not difficult to be a Boston sports fan!!

As mentioned above, you will find RI housing much more affordable. Providence to Boston is about an hour traffic dependent. Providence to Stamford is A little over two hours traffic dependent. Again, if you can take the train, you are that much better off.

Depends how far away from Boston you would like to live. I'd probably check out areas like Norwood, Canton, Stoughton, Sharon....if you don't want to be too far from Boston....but if you don't care....I'd probably say RI sounds like a good halfway point

Thanks for the insight so far, guys.

I have ruled out Providence moreso because of the taxation issue. Looks like RI taxes heavily on the state level. I dont want to pay MA and RI taxes. Its already tough enough coming from no state income taxes.

I have looked into Canton/Stoughton, Malden, Chelsea, Lexington and Danvers for an apartment. Thoughts?

How about southern NH? I live in Nashua, NH and commute to Bedford, MA everyday. Boston is about 30~45 minutes from Nashua, unless you are traveling in rush hour. Its right on the state line and you can find a decent apartment right on the MA/NH state line and no sales tax NH is great if you are renting, not so great when you own your own place though.

There are a few apartment complexes in Billerica as well, right on route 3 and rent isnt too bad either.

I actually started my search in NH two weeks ago, although I was further north in Manchester/Hooksett. I didnt even both looking at Nashua, but I will add that to my list. I remember reading about the high property taxes in NH....but I'll be a renter again. I'll be headed up to MA/NH later this week to look at more places.

What is considered rush hour times for that stretch of highway?

Sucks its not possible to get out of paying MA income taxes by living in NH

Lexington is a nice town. The Minute Man bike trail passes through there. I don't know much about the others. Try to avoid older apartments if you have pay to heat them with oil. It can be very expensive.
