Bernie: Wins to decide F1 title
Monday 17th March 2008

F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone is keen to see the Drivers' Championship decided on race wins rather than points.

According to Ecclestone, F1 needs more overtaking and more excitement and that both objects would be achieved if drivers took more risks to pass each other.

And one reason to take risks would be if it were wins, not points, that won a driver the title.

"I got a bit waylaid last season, what with all the business with McLaren and Ferrari, but it is my intention to push this idea through in the coming weeks," Ecclestone told the Mail on Sunday.

"The key word in motor racing is 'racing.' And right now there are not enough overtaking manoeuvres in the sport because drivers are happy not to take risks and claim second place because it is only two points less than winning the race.

"What I want to see is the winner of the most number of races as World Champion, and second places only to be used if the top two finish the season with the same number of wins.

"The constructors would keep the existing system."

How does this make it more like Nascar where top 5's and 10's can lead to you a championship.

I don't think its a perfect system but its probably a step in the right direction IMO.

But then you'd have teams complaining which led them to the current points system in the first place.

Exactly. I much prefered the old point system, 10,6,4,3,2,1.

Why not just do points like golf, lowest points win, 22nd place is 22 points? It would make it somewhat interesting at least.
