Congrats!!

If only PD would get into S2K driving now. He's already excelled in ITRs, NSXs, and now the TSX. Too bad the World Challenge doesn't have a category it would fit into.

I don't know if we'd be saying that if Bill Auberlen participated in a full season.

That guy is fast.

He was fast in the 2 rounds that he came back, but remember, most of the front runners were carrying more REWARDS weights than him during the 2 rounds that he participated.

But, I also believe that anyone who is only half participating in the series will be hit with ~150 lbs of rewards weight as well. This rule was put in to keep people from jumping in and winning in and getting some quick wins.

Here is the summary of rewards weight in the 2 races Bill won

Lime Rock Park
# Driver Car Weight
42 Peter Cunningham Acura TSX 250
43 Pierre Kleinubing Acura TSX 250
72 Jeff Altenburg Mazda 6 165
97 Charles Espenlaub Mazda 6 80
98 Bob Stretch BMW 325Ci 60
1 Bill Auberlen BMW 325i 60
2 Will Turner BMW 325i 50*
87 Manny Matz BMW 325i 50*
27 Nic Jonsson BMW 325Ci 30
38 Seth Thomas BMW 325i 30
45 Eric Curran Acura RSX 5

I'm looking for the rewards weight summary at Infineon raceway. He won 2 back to back races, so I'm sure his rewards weight was up there in the second race. Either way, with or without weight, you gotta respect Bill Auberlen. He knows how to get around in those BMWs!

This rule applies to newcomers starting after round 3. I think Touring gets 50 lbs and GT gets 100 lbs. Since Auberlen started in the opening round, this rule did not apply to him.

Next year the BMW teams might be using the new 3 series model. Should be a great fight if that happens.

What motor will they be running though? The new 325 is running on 3.0L motor which is over the engine size rule in Touring. Will they be running the old 325 motor in the new E90 chassis? Or will they bring in the 2.5L motor from oversea to run here? I'd like to find out what they're planning on doing next year.

I'd also like to see a team to campaign the new Lexus IS250. This car fits perfectly in Touring.

From an article on speedtv.com back in September:

Unveiled this week at the Frankfurt auto show in Germany, the new 3 will carry on as the automaker’s works entry in the World Touring Car Championship, and also be available to customer teams worldwide.

Slightly larger than its predecessor, the E90 racer’s main distinction in comparison to the E46-based car is the fact it's powered by a 2.0-liter in-line four, whereas the E46 was motivated by an I6 power plant. The car fully complies to the FIA’s Super 2000 regulations that guide the WTCC and most of Europe’s national touring car championships.

From this, it looks like the 2006 WTCC 325 will run a 2.0L engine, and I would imagine that the 2006 SCCA 325 will run a 2.5L engine.

Very good point vwong.

Over time in Speed WC they have increased displacement in the class to allow for a good mix of cars. They may well up the specs at some point to allow the 3 liter engines and just legislate them equal with the 4 bangers (which wouldn't be hard to do). It would also allow cars like the Volvo that's running in GT to step down to TC and be successful (which I'm sure the factory would like). And with other turbos that might come in it could be a really comprehensive series. There were a TON of cars at Laguna - love to see those big fields. There is always room to open up the restrictions and let the TC cars run. There's a ton more HP in that RealTime motor if they let them get to it.

I'm not sure though that Turner is going to come back - even though he said they would. I guess they really love Grand Am and it is a lot cheaper to run compared to Speed WC. I'd love to see a multi-team fight with RealTime, Turner, Tri-Point et al really going for it all year long. And I'd love to see a Lexus factory IS in there too. Don't be scared gents - RealTime is as good a team as you can get and the TSX will be successful no matter who comes in.

And don't forget the possibility of the new Acura halo car coming and Cunningham running it in GT as well in the next few years. Might be an all Acura World Challenge sweep at some point in our future. :-)

Oh and I almost forgot. At the WC banquet they announced that they will be running at Infineon as a support race for Nextel Cup next year...

I can't wait to see Henzler or Liddell run a faster lap than a hillbilly in a Buick.

Personally, I would disagree on increasing the displacement for Touring just because the US version of BMW is running the 3.0L motor. It seems unfair to me if SCCA does this. They didn't do that for the IS300, but instead they forced them to destroke to 2.8L. Since BMW is a big player in motorsports, instead of increasing the displacement, I would (if I were SCCA) allow them to run the 2.5L motor from oversea just to keep BMW in the series.

As for the Volvo, the S60R is clearly out of the Touring's league. The car to compete in Touring should be the S40 instead. The S40 T5 seems to fit well (given limiting the turbo boost) in Touring.

Other makes and models that I'd like to see in Touring are Audi A4 2.0T, Mercedes C230 sedan (with the 2.5L V6, forget about the C230 coupe), Subaru Legacy 2.5GT, and Lexus IS250. Then add the veterans, Acura TSX, Mazda6, and BMW 325, this will be one hell of a field.

The SCCA has a lot of options about the BMW - it's just not that big a deal to go from 2.8 to 3.0. And with competition adjustments that will happen no matter the displacement it could work. But you are right they may well use the 2.5.

As for the S60, if you dial back the boost on that car it would fit in very nicely with TC - would just need a different set of rules. I dunno if Volvo would want to step down, that's a little bit like conceding defeat (that car is a dog in GT). But an S40 would be a great fit too. I think however that Volvo wants to use their R line for racing and there is no S40 R is there?

What flavor Audi is running now? It's an older A4 isn't it? I'd love to see Champion in there with a new one - I know they are planning on returning to GT when the new RS6 comes out.

That C230 coupe that runs now kinda got screwed by the rules. They started their program before they allowed forced induction and they let them build a whole new motor. I wonder if they pitched that and went to the SC version if they'd have more success.

And as I mentioned vefore I would REALLY like to see Toyota come in full bore with Lexus - I think that'd be huge.

Man it's gonna be a fun couple years in world-challenge. Road Racing is comin' on strong!

Stasis is running a pair of B5 A4 1.8T now. They brought out one B6 A4 1.8T at the Laguna Seca race. Unfortunately, the car had some problem so their race was cut short. It'll be nice to have Champion Audi to come back out in GT and maybe Touring. If they do join the Touring series, they'll probably be fighting with Tri-Point to get Randy Pobst driving for them.

Oh yeah I didn't even think of that. I wonder if Pobst would even run both. Has he ever run both classes at the same time? I know PD has...

And it was Stasis I couldn't remember the name of, thx.

Did you watch any of the ALMS race at Laguna? That Porsche is scary fast for a first race...

I don't think Pobst has run both classes in the same season before, but it doesn't mean that he wouldn't in the future. Hell, if I'm a good driver like him, and get paid for driving, I'll run both.

Yeah, I saw about 3 hours of ALMS there. My wife and my friend were tired, so we took left without seeing the finish. You're talking about the Porsche in P2? Yeah, that thing was fast. I was more interested in seeing those Aston Martins. I'm willing to give up 5 years of my life just to drive that thing for 5 laps around Laguna Seca.

Heh.

A good friend of mine is a distributor of Radicals and keeps me up on their plans to enter prototype racing in Europe and the States. That's a huge huge thing for privateers running in P2 - that coupled with Porsche's new interest (with their customer plans) and all the great news coming out of World Challenge and Grand Am has me really psyched for the next couple years. I wish the Astons had come to Atlanta at the sprint race earlier in the year (I didn't get to go to Petite LeMans to see them). It was cool to see the Maserati though.

Kighter <---- cannot wait for next season

Well, the TSX still rules. Pierre Kleinubing wins the championship this year instead of team-mate Peter Cunningham. Acura takes the manufacturing championship.

Bimmerworld is campaigning a E90 325i in SWC. They haven't had any luck with it because the whole field loves to use that car as a brake assist on corner entry.

I do think the BMW's had some unfair penalties at the beginning of the year after Bill got the 1st place. All of the E46's got weight penalties, and had their rev limeters decreased. Meanwhile, the Mazda guys get to run with Hewland Sequential Gearboxes. It's kind of dissapointing how the SCCA is treating this series IMO.

Agree to a point. Basing competition adjustments on Auberlen's performance is like making all of Team Discovery ride tricycles in the Tour de France becasue of Lance Armstrong. That BMW has always been fast fast fast in his hands. Noone else can come close.

And Mazda running those trannies just boggles my mind. I guess each car/team has something they do exceptionally well and they try to take all of that into account when they adjust. I think they do a pretty good job generally.

I'm just jaded with the SCCA as a whole in many facets, not just SWC. It is what it is though, and they're not going to change any time soon.
