SCCA to Lift FI Ban in Speed World Touring Car Challenge

SCCA Pro Racing recently lifted a ban on forced induction, but only inline 4 bangers will be eligible:
http://www.world-challenge.com/compe...-induction.pdf

The rule only allows turbocharges, superchargers, etc. that are sold as a stock option, so no add-on kits.

Interesting...so that means if Realtime wants FI on their cars...Acura has to offer TSX/RSX with FI for consumers....

But I doubt it'll happen

We'll see how things go. If the FI cars start winning every race, then the SCCA will rethink the rules change.

It'll be interesting to see which cars can compete. Wonder if the F4 in the Subie WRX qualifies?

SRT-4, Cobalt SS, Ion Redline.

As for the WRX and EVO, I don't think AWD is allowed

That may be true, but Chrysler and GM don't currently participate in the Challenge.

Because they did'nt have a product that was eligible (or stood a chance). This announcement leaves more than enough time for them to have cars ready for next season.

I can see the SRT-4 kicking some serious butt.

I'm sure that there will be the usual restrictions on output just as there is with NA cars. I can see the SRT-4 being competitive, but kicking butt...I'll reserve my judgement for when I actually see the specs for a competition car.

The SRT-4 does'nt handle as bad as you might think. In the last issue of SPEED magazine its laptimes were just off those of a Celica GT-S with the TRD handling package.

Considering that the power requirements for almost all the cars leveled in Speed World Challenge, I don't think FI will play that big of a role in TC. I'd take a NA over a Turbo making equal power, and although FI will make more torque, I have no doubt SCCA will balance it well.

This might be a tool to get more companies to participate in TC (read American car companies), as they cannot build a good engine under the 3.0L cutoff. Is the Ford Focus team the only one competiting in TC?

Could the FWD Audi A4 or VW GTI compete? How about a Scion TC TRD team or a Mini Cooper Works team? I would love to see a more diverse field, sorry Giblo having 1/2 of the field as BMWs can get boring.

I'm not questioning its handling, but I think that the HP advantage it would have would be limited by restrictions on the FI cars, effectively placing it in the same area as all the other cars in the field. I don't think it'll be blowing people away by as much as you might think, owing to restrictions.

I guess the rules don't really allow for anyone to be blown away but there was a time when the ITR dominated the World Challenge. Its seems the feild is pretty level now but a car can always come along and again dominate like the ITR did.

ITR = honda torqueless wonder, and it was the ultimate racing machine

I think that's a great example that even w/ FWD and little torque, suspension and overall build can make or break the race car.

I rode shotgun in a 04 SRT4 at an autocross, it was a lot better than I expected (although it tore a motor mount off the line But I hear that the chasis and suspension have too much flex, which leads owners to replace all of the bushings w/ polyurethane ones (which you can do in TC).

Its scary to think the Evo could compete if they drop the HP to under the 275 limit. I'm not a fan of the AWD idea though, what's the defination of touring anyways, 4 seats? The WRX and Evo are designed for Rally, there has to be something to keep them out
