Ralf gets warned!

Williams has told Ralf to get w/ the program as evidenced in the following:

Ralf Schumacher has been told that he must raise his game if he wants to keep his Williams drive.

Schumacher, who has made a lacklustre start to the season, was sent a letter by Frank Williams and Patrick Head telling him that his performances so far are not up to expectations.

The German has so far failed to get the hang of the sport’s new one-lap qualifying format and has not threatened at the front of the field.

A Williams source told The Sun: "At the moment Frank and Patrick do not feel Ralf is giving them value for money and told him so in no uncertain terms in the letter they sent him.

"They know what Ralf is capable of and they are anxious for him to start performing at that level. They want him to pull his finger out and race at the front."

Schumacher has been shown up by team-mate Juan Pablo Montoya, who could have won in Australia had he not spun late on.

Ralf’s case is not helped by the fact he earns considerably more than Montoya. He is believed to be on more than £10million a season, double the Colombian’s salary.

However, Williams has so far defended Ralf in public.

He said: "The car is a bit difficult to set up. When it's quick, it's way quick but when it's not so finely balanced it is quite difficult to drive.

"Maybe the pressure is difficult. Ralf's in a very tough situation but he can handle it. It's just that it's not working for him at the moment."

And Schumacher also has allies in engine suppliers BMW’s camp. Mario Theissen is keen to see him stay beyond the terms of his current contract, which expires in 2004.

He said: "Essentially the team's continuity is a major factor. We want to work with the same drivers, they know the car, the engine, and the team. I think Williams has to keep both drivers, Ralf Schumacher, and Juan Pablo Montoya."

PS-I never liked Ralf, he's only there b/c of his name.

Great point Red-Mario Thiessen (BMW head of racing) stated that point very early on in their association w/ Williams. Who else do they have? Heidfeld? Michael of course and I guess that's it right? Juan does seem to be adapting to the one lap qualifying better though (he's a better qualifier anyway). I like watching the Brazilian GP, it's a good track. Supposedly they've gotten some of those monster bumps out of the front straight so maybe different passing opportunities will have been created. JPM-1st!

Granted CART only qualified like this on ovals, but it had to help Juan prepare for this kind of setup. I still think it's the best thing F1 has done in years
