Oz first qualifying session

JV, even tho he had a total of 5 laps practice in the afternoon session, runs to an amazing third. Not really sure what to read into this b/c some teams may be running heavy fuel loads, while others are running light. Remember, What they have in the tank is what they start with on Sunday as the cars are in parc ferme from sat. till start of the race w/ no team intervention.

Here's the results from last nite:

RUBENS IS F1'S FIRST ONE-LAP WONDER
2003-03-07 04:06:00
Rubens Barrichello made a little bit of history by topping F1’s first ever one-lap qualifying session.

The Ferrari driver clocked the best time in the session, which decides in what order the drivers will run in final qualifying on Saturday. Barrichello set a time of 1m26.372s to edge out practice pacesetter Kimi Raikkonen and ensure that he will be last out on track in the battle for pole.

The new format ran smoothly throughout but it is still too early to say how much can be read into the times. Were the drivers all running on low fuel or did some venture out with fuller tanks? It may not be until Sunday's race that we get a genuine idea of the relative pace of the teams and drivers.

The biggest surprise of the session was the raw pace of BAR duo Jacques Villeneuve and Jenson Button. Both drivers got little track time in practice due to engine blow-ups but that didn’t stop them from ending up an impressive third and fifth.

But the BARs were almost upstaged by the very last driver out, rookie Cristiano da Matta, who was enormously fast in the first two sectors before fading to 11th.

Michael Schumacher was an unspectacular fourth quickest but Barrichello demonstrated that Ferrari remain very much the team to beat.

In contrast, Williams have it all to do after a hugely disappointing display. Ralf Schumacher was the first man to fall foul of the new format, running wide in Turn One and ending up down in 16th, a whopping 1.8s off the pace.

But team-mate Juan Pablo Montoya demonstrated that, even given a reasonably clear run, the FW25 is still well off the pace. The Colombian was down in 10th.

Another driver who will be disappointed with his efforts will be home favourite Mark Webber. The Australian, a stunning fifth on his F1 debut here last year, faltered under the weight of expectation and ended up 15th after very nearly losing it at the first corner.

Da Matta apart, F1's rookies had a difficult time and ended up occupying three of the bottom four places.

Ralph Firman emulated his Williams namesake Schumacher by taking a trip across the grass while Antonio Pizzonia and Justin Wilson both struggled to hook their laps together, the Jaguar driver in particular looking very untidy.

Below are the times. Remember, they do not count towards the grid but the slowest driver - Wilson - will be the first to run in Saturday qualifying while Barrichello will go last.

JV has consistently done this w/ his team mates. He did it to Hill, and especially to Frentzen. Personally it reminds me of the way Senna, Prost and Schumacher operate so really doesn't bother me. They might drive for the same team but nothing, and I mean nothing, is more self-centered than a racing driver within a team of 2. JV's contract runs this year and he has to make sure he gets picked up for at least another year on a high note. If he sucks as bad as he did last 4 years, my opinion sez he'll be out of F1 permanently.

Ya think so Astro? I wish Ferrari wld pick him up, Christ, Gilles Villeneuve was like the Second Coming of Christ in that team for the "Old Man" and maybe someone in there wld get him the seat. Now that would be unfriggin' believable (highly unlikely too)
