It looks as though it's going to be a coolish race, I suspect Ferrari are going to have the upper hand on tires again. Calling for rain on Saturday, hope not, that's my favorite part of the weekend but if it does, I'm ready.
This year's Ferrari has shown to be easier on the new tire's in getting them in their narrow temp range and are gentler than the MB so they have some leeway in strategy sometimes.
Another factor some F1 techs have pointed out is the Ferrari chassis setup is quick and predicable, something the 2014-2016 MB cars were re-known for.
Hamilton and Bottas have had a race or two where they've struggled to find a optimum setup.

Lots of slides and shunts today in FP1 and FP2 around turns 3-4.... Tire pressure? Cross-winds? Dusty track surfaces?

Caught a super short highlights clip, poor Alonso, looked like the car died at the hairpin.

Team Orders with David Couldhard

Very interesting video on David Couldard on 1997 European GP and team orders and how it affected the race.

Anyone else in town for the GP?

Very sad to see Alonso's car pretty much go into limp-mode at the hairpin (where I was for the practice round yesterday)... I can imagine how pissed off he was. But huge kudos to him for acknowledging the crowd on the stands, on our feet applauding him. The man is a class act.

BTW, from the stands at the hairpin, Ferrari acceleration (both Kimi and Seb) at the hairpin exit was noticeable a lot faster and planted with a lot more grip than anyone else. I bet ferrari 1-2 again with Kimi up front (he looked very very confident and even more relaxed than usual... even by Kimi standards lol).

Lots of Peter Windsor interviews of Williams people at Canadian GP

Nice Motorsport interviews of Patrick Head, Paddy Lowe, and Riccardo Patrese.

Really amazing Lowe not only led the development of the Williams active suspension but also wrote all the S/W to control it for the car and off-car systems.

Will Buxton made a killing on the pre-race interviews. Patrick Stewart, Gene Haas, and Michael Douglas. Really cool.

Too bad Vettel got his wing chopped off by Verstappen as it killed the intrigue up front.

Wonder what was said in the Force India debrief.

How many times will we hear "Alonso is slowing down..." this year? What a debacle for McLaren-Honda. Looks like Alonso is outta there.

As all Montrealers know, weather conditions can change dramatically on and around the island within hours. So during Saturday quali the wind wasn't blowing that hard compare to Sunday afternoon that was seriously windy. Also Saturday the humidity was much higher than Sunday. AMG was set up for that scenario very well, everyone else wasn't. A testament in AMG engineering. Vettel may have the "Balls" to pull some stunts but he lacks the really smart engineering team AMG has.

PS. Alonso is a class act and was the fan favorite in Montreal, a true sportsman, he wowed everyone when he jumped on the hairpin stands to shake hands with pretty much everyone ! Next year McLaren-AMG... RIP Honda F1.

https://www.formula1.com/en/latest/h...lap-shunt.html

Toro Rosso’s Carlos Sainz has been handed a three-place grid drop for the next race in Azerbaijan for his part in the opening lap incident which eliminated both him and Williams’ Felipe Massa from the race, and left Romain Grosjean with front wing damage.

Dicing in the midfield pack on the run down to Turn 3, Sainz made contact with Romain Grosjean’s Haas before losing control, spinning into Massa’s car and ending up in the barriers.

The stewards announced that they would investigate the incident after the race, and having heard from both Sainz and Grosjean they determined that whilst the collision was not caused by a deliberate act, Sainz’s assumption that no car was alongside him, and that therefore he could move to the right, was both “careless and potentially dangerous”.

As well as receiving the grid drop, Sainz was also given two penalty points on his licence, bringing his total for the last 12 months to seven. The Spaniard, who was also reprimanded on Friday, will receive a one-race ban if he receives a further five penalty points within the same period.

Grosjean, who recovered to finish 10th, said Sainz’s move reminded him of the first-lap incident he was involved in at Belgium 2012 that earned him a one-race ban.

“It was the same manoeuvre as me turning on Lewis [Hamilton]," the Frenchman said.

"If he sees me or not, I was there, I was well alongside him so it’s the same type of thing. I’m not saying it’s a race ban, I’m not saying he needs a big fine as I had, but I’m saying I’m very unhappy with the way he behaved and I think it was very dangerous.”

Sainz later apologised to Grosjean and Massa for his part in the incident, saying on Twitter: “Romain was simply on my blind spot and never got to see him. Glad we are all OK!”

Does anyone think Honda can produce an engine that can compete? I'm still in shock at how horrible their performance is.

If we ignore the two freak wins by Oliver Panis (Ligier-Mugen-Honda at Monaco in 1996) and Jenson Buttom (Honda at Hungary in 2006), then Honda hasn't had a "proper" victory since the 1992 Adelaide Grand Prix. So that's 25 years of non-involvement, minimal involvement, or poor performance.

Maybe we shouldn't be so shocked?

Alonso was actually doing decently, in the points, until it gave up on him with only a handful of laps to go.
I believe his words were, paraphrased, that if Honda isn't winning by September, it's not enough for him to stay.

Easy to forget but Honda/BAR's 2004 F1 season saw them 2nd place in the constructors championship and 3rd place (Jenson Button) in the driver's championship. Also Jordan-Mugen/Honda placed 3rd in the constructors championship in 1998 and 3rd in the (HHF) in the drivers championships. Two rare bright season of Honda's post 1992 F1 involvement.

You should hear it live, it sounds worse than it performs and that is no exaggeration, in fact I told my wife there used to be a time when I could recognize which car was going past just by the sound of the engines and I couldn't any more. A little bit later Van Doorne shot past and I said "except I always know which one is Honda."

I still think Honda is capable but I also think McLaren is a bad match for them. Even if Honda was the discount engine for a while, that would be preferable over them leaving.
