Audi May Join Formula One With Sauber - The Drive

Dieselgate has not quashed the brand's desire to prove itself in F1

Despite Volkwagen Group's financial setbacks from Dieselgate, Audi is setting its sights high—possibly even on Formula One. German publication spox.com (via f1i.com) reports that an emissary from Audi is being sent this Friday to Paris to influence Formula One's planned engine regulations for 2022 onward. It was initially assumed that Audi canned its Blancpain World Endurance Championship efforts after the diesel scandal came to light—despite having several successful years—but now it looks like it may have done so in preparation for an upward move to F1.

Rumors of VAG wishing to join Formula One have been making their rounds for years, with the company itself denouncing the claims on at least one occasion to Autosport. The Autosport article also makes a second curious distinction: "the Volkswagen Group will not enter Formula 1 until the ownership of the sport and the technical regulations are settled." This statement was made before the American media conglomerate, Liberty Media, bought out the rights to the sport in late 2016, which means the former half of VAG's concerns with entering the sport have been appeased.

One question, however, does remain. Does Audi, upon entering the sport, try to build a new team from the group up, ā la Haas F1, or does it partner with an existing team—the way Honda did? The dissolution of its WEC efforts saw valuable members of its motorsports team catch outward-bound flights to other disciplines of motorsport. One name associated with this was Jörg Zander, who was the Head of Technology at Audi Sport, and was tasked with the success of the WEC team. After the team met a sad fate after the conclusion of the 2016 season, Zander made a flight to familiar ground at Sauber F1, where he had been chief designer during some of the team's halcyon days of BMW Sauber.

Now, there is no guarantee that Audi and Zander will seek each other out again, to form a Sauber Audi partnership with which to compete in the 2022 F1 season. Sauber has never been the most successful outfit, so Audi may instead seek out a more successful team like Williams, McLaren, Force India, or Red Bull to aid in its F1 efforts. Given Zander's ability in constructing competitive cars, however, it won't be unsurprising if Audi pursues a pairing with Sauber because of old ties. Time will tell

https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/m...f1-car-887874/

Mercedes has admitted that the weight of its 2017 Formula 1 car is an area that needs work on, as it bids to bounce back from defeat at the Australian Grand Prix.

Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel came out on top at Albert Park after a finely-poised F1 season opener that was effectively swung by Lewis Hamilton's tyre degradation not being as good as his rival's.

Although the tyre usage of the car has been singled out by Hamilton as a key area, one other issue that has come to light is the weight of the car.

With components having been bulked up this year because of the extra forces coming from the higher cornering speeds, plus engine parts being more robust now that there are only four power units for the campaign, the weight of the Mercedes is understood to have crept over the 728kg minimum limit.

The extra weight not only costs laptime, but teams like to be well under the minimum weight restriction with their basic car so that they can then position ballast in the right places to help with handling.

While Mercedes boss Toto Wolff would not confirm a report from Auto Motor Und Sport that the car was 5kg over the 728kg target, he did say that efforts were being made to bring the weight down.

"I don't want to go too much into detail but it's an area we can definitely improve," explained Wolff.

"With new regulations and the size of the cars, you need to balance out all the time between performance parts and the weight. And that's an ongoing exercise which we are doing."

Mercedes is not the only team that is facing headaches regarding weight.

Red Bull is understood to have found itself right at the weight limit thanks to the extra 5kg it has had to carry with Renault reverting to its 2016 MGU-K for the start of the campaign.

One of the reasons why Red Bull did not pursue a more complex suspension system after the FIA clampdown was because the weight of the design had started creeping up.

Force India too had big concerns about the weight of its car – ordering its drivers to go on diets after testing to help – but thinks it can address matters by the Bahrain Grand Prix.

Deputy team principal Bob Fernley told Motorsport.com: "We're already okay from a weight point.

"We're actually underweight but we're not enough underweight, so by Bahrain we will have enough of a variance there to be able to get the ballast where we want it. It's only a ballast issue."

^ Back in the 70's the weight limit (without the driver or fuel but with water and fluids) the F1 car weight limit was 580kg, then as technology and composites brought the weight down, it was lowered to 540kg, then 500kg.
Most teams couldn't get the car down to 500kg but it got revised again to go higher

Why F1 cars keep getting heavier ˇ F1 Fanatic

article on F1 weight limits since the start

I would rather them build a works team honestly as I would like to see us get to back to a field of 22 or even someone have another team come aboard and get to 24. I know it probably won't happen though.

Quality over quantity, but that's just me. Seems like it'll be at least another few years at the very least, again if it ever comes to fruition. My fear is that the high-water mark for Dieselgate has not yet been reached and that there may be more repercussions in the offing. We'll see....

Sauber's apparently casting about for a new PU-supplier as well.... Sauber Considering Honda, Mercedes Engines for F1 2018

"The final decision has to be made soon, because under Appendix 9 of the F1 Sporting Regulations manufacturers have to notify the FIA of the teams it wishes to supply by May 6. Team principal Monisha Kaltenborn confirmed that talks have taken place with Honda. 'All I can tell you is yes we have had discussions with them,' Kaltenborn told Motorsport.com. 'But we are open on our engine situation.'"

Stef at Jalop: Formula One Will Give Us the Louder Engines We Demand (a.k.a. Give Me Liberty [Media Group], or Give Me Death!)

"Interestingly, the Volkswagen Group was one of the companies in attendance. Perhaps hopes of a potential Audi Formula One effort aren’t dead yet."

Reminiscent of what Audi did to the S4 back in 2002-2003, before moving back to forced induction in 2008 (supercharger) and 2017 (turbocharger):

Apparently the VW representative was from Lamborghini, but I wouldn't expect much news on that front for a number of years. Apparently VW had shelved an F1 engine some time ago.

I missed the race last year and the year before was rainy so I only caught the race. In 2014 there were Ferrari 458 races and Porsche 911 races after quali.

When BMW brought out their production S85 V10 for the E60 M5 and E63 M6 in 2005, they were angry at FIA when they changed from 3l V10's to 2.4l V8's in 2006.
The decision to use the production V10 was conincidal to BMW's involvement with F1 as a engine supplier and finally a fullup race team.

Red Bull: The key areas where Christian Horner's team need to improve

Red Bull: The key areas where Christian Horner's team need to improve - BBC Sport

Adrian Newey didn't look happy in the garages in Austrialia.
The 2017 RB chassis narrow setup window the article alludes to is one area MB didn't have to worry about in the previous 3 years.
Something also that's been problematic for Williams chassis's over the past few years and I wonder if that's why Pat Symonds was fired with a year to go on his contract.
On the MB 2014-2016's chassis's, the engineers and techs could easily dial in the car settings both mechanically and aerodynamically so that they had good compromise in setup for qualifying and race form.

I wouldn't count them out but at this juncture I'd say it's a 2 horse race between Ferrari and MBZ with RBR picking up scraps.

Yeah, RBR could turn it around but I'm a little surprised how I was expecting RBR to have a superior chassis at the start to Ferrari and perhaps MB with the revised 2m cars and more loose aerodynamic rules for wings/bargeboards/tray/floor.
Thought it would have been a godsend to Newey's chassis/aero technical wizardry.

, even thought it's only be one race and pre-season testing, it looks like a Ferrari and MB year.

FWIW, RBR has lost a few mid-level aero engineers and designers in the past few seasons to Ferrari, MB, and other teams.
This happens all the time, but I'm guessing/wondering if they've had some brain drain which has cost them some edge?
IIRC RBR invested heavily in CFD in the late 2000's/early 2010's and it paid off well for them and Vettel.

Red Bull is now saying that they expect to win by the middle of the year. I guess that's when they expect the upgrades from TAG Heuer will be ready. Doesn't look good for them to win the championship though.

They're expecting the next bump from Renault in Canada. That'll be just in time for a fast circuit heavy on horsepower. This week in China? McLaren Honda's lack of power will be showcased by the longest straight in F1.

Wonder if Ron Dennis and Jensen Button are just slightly relived to not have to be dealing with the McLaren/Honda ongoing crisis?

As caustic as the Ronster could be, I believe he was more than a formidable figure in the pit lane and without his guidance, McLaren would be nowhere near where they are in the history books. He's got to be looking at the team just shaking his head.
