Bourdais in at Toro Rosso

With a brief announcement deprived of the team’s usual irony, Scuderia Toro Rosso confirmed Sebastien Bourdais’ lifelong dream: the Frenchman will have a full-time Formula 1 ride in 2008.

The triple Champ Car champion, currently battling for a fourth Vanderbilt Cup, will be released by his Newman/Haas/Lanigan team by the end of this season.

"It has been a long time coming, but here we are!" the 28-year-old stated. "I would like to thank everyone at Red Bull for believing in me and giving me this long-awaited opportunity to race in Formula 1. I must also thank Newman/Haas/Lanigan Racing for letting me pursue my dream and allowing me to test for Scuderia Toro Rosso a few times this year."

Bourdais will partner Sebastien Vettel at STR next season, leaving current driver Tonio Liuzzi to look for a new ’08 ride.
I wonder if Bourdais will still be a happy camper a year from now?

Who will take his place at N/H/L?

I agree. Sad because he TRULY is a nice guy and has a passion for racing. I had the privilege of having dinner with him one night at a Make A Wish event at a local steakhouse. Even sadder is that I was one of a handful of guys in the restaurant who even knew who he was...

Too bad that when Doornbos beat him that 1 time he wouldn't even shake his hand on the podium....... not very sportsmanship like.

Personally, I expect he wont last in F1 too long... hes pretty old for a F1 rookie...

I wonder about this but don't think he will be beating Vettel for a while. I think this guy is a complete flaming asshole. I'll be glad to watch him get gigantic doses of humble pie in the Toro Rosso as a backmarker.

As did I until I had an hour or so to talk to him. Hell, he was even throwing around a football in the restaurant with the Indianapolis Colts players and letting loose a bit.

From talking to him, you could tell he is dead serious when he straps into a car and will do anything to get to the front.

Alguersuari gets nod for Hungary debut

By Jonathan Noble Monday, July 13th 2009, 09:54 GMT

Jaime Alguersuari will become the youngest Formula 1 driver in history when he makes his debut for the Scuderia Toro Rosso team as replacement for Sebastien Bourdais at the Hungarian Grand Prix, AUTOSPORT has learned.

Following a weekend of speculation about Bourdais' future, on the back of a disappointing first half to the campaign, Toro Rosso is expected to confirm within the next 48 hours that it has decided to part company with the Frenchman.

And although the team has decided that reigning British F3 champion Alguersuari will be slotted into the seat alongside Sebastien Buemi, an announcement confirming the plan is not expected until after the Spaniard has finished competing in this weekend's World Series by Renault race at Le Mans.

Toro Rosso has decided to give the youngster the race opportunity in spite of his lack of experience as it is the only way for him to gain experience in preparation for a full season in 2010, due to the in-season testing ban. The team has so far declined to comment on the situation.

There are also suggestions that Alguersuari's step up is being eased by Spanish oil company Repsol, who are personal backers of the youngster and are poised to tie-up a deal with Toro Rosso.

Alguersuari's step-up means he will make his debut at the age of 19 years and 125 days. It beats the previous record of 19 years and 182 days held by Mike Thackwell, who drove for Tyrrell in Canada 1980 - although was officially a non-starter after a first-lap red flag.

The next youngest driver was Ricardo Rodriguez, who raced for Ferrari at the 1961 Italian Grand Prix aged 19 years and 208 days.

Despite Alguersuari's promotion to the race seat, Sebastien Loeb remains linked with a switch to F1 with Toro Rosso once his commitments in the world rally championship are finished this season.

I totally agree. It's really hard to support either one. Their only gig now is as team mates on the Peugeot LM.

Bourdais has been a bit of a whiner in F1, kinda surprised how hard his F1 experience was compared to Montoya and JV. Reminded me of Zarnardi's experience at Williams. And both he and Zarnardi had tremendous results in CART before crossing the pond.

Bourdais was a whiner before he went to F1.

Actually, Alex crossed the pond twice: started as an F1 driver w/ Minardi then came to CART then back to Williams as an F1 driver. At least Alex was not a whiner like Seb has always been.

It's official, what most forget is that Bordias was set to get 4th place in his first GP (2008 Australian) when the Ferrari motor failed 2 laps before the end. None the less he placed 7th overall, pretty good for his first GP. Luck, fate, and his inability to sync in with the car/team ultimately led to where he's today.

Patrick Head has some amusing comments about Alex's work ethic, but did say he was a charming and warm driver to work with.

SB was a winner in CART, so when you're winning you're not a whiner but was "focused", "driven", and have "attitude". When you're not getting results, you're whining

Still always amused me how varied the success/failure was of the CART drivers who got into F1.

Bourdais was a winner and a whinner in ChampCar. You can be a graceful loser, or you can be whinney. I could never stand the guy because he was always whinning.
