Refresh my memory, was the ACO not going with the "merged" prototype rules of the (A)LMS series?

The merged prototype class for LMP1 and LMP2 is only for the ALMS, due to low participation.

Wednesday Practice:

The three works Peugeot 908s and the factory-supported ORECA entry held the top four positions at the end of the opening practice session ahead of this weekend's Le Mans 24 Hours.

Audi's R15 Plus is a clear improvement over last year's car but it has yet to equal the Peugeots' pace around the Circuit de la Sarthe, with the Tom Kristensen, Dindo Capello, Allan McNish car best of the rest in fifth.

After the drama of the opening hour, as the Peugeot drivers outdid one another with a string of ever faster times, the session settled down with the majority of teams content to work through their pre-planned programmes.
I feel bad for the guys that will be at Montreal this weekend and miss this race on tv.

What is Honda doing? They've got the fastest car in P2, but instead of calling it Honda or Acura, it's branded HPD. Marketing fail.

I was very disappoint.
Stupid Peugeout. Great to see Audi make an impressive comeback. Somewhere in my head I had hoped Peugeot would finally do good... At least they did excellent in qualifying though
Wasn't too happy with Highcroft and Flying Lizard either

Peugeot cars had a lot of problems the whole race. I believe they lost one very early on, and then they lost another during the night.

Audi ties Ferrari with Le Mans wins.

Turbo-diesel cars absolutely dominated the LMP1 category. Acura should forget about using gasoline engine for next season's LMP1 contenders, or watch itself eating dust off the diesel P1 cars.

Don't forget that the prototype rules are going to change in a fairly significant fashion next year.

On Thursday, June 10, the Automobile Club de L'Ouest (ACO), which organizes the 24 Hours of Le Mans, held its annual press conference and announced new technical regulations for the 2011 event as well as the European Le Mans Series. The ACO has long encouraged a variety of powerplant configurations, which is what prompted first Audi and then Peugeot to develop diesel-powered prototypes. 2011 will bring the official introduction of hybrid power to Le Mans racing in all of the new classes.

Next year the club will move even further in the direction already pioneered by the American Le Mans Series with its "green racing" initiatives. The top LMP1 class will adopt what are essentially the current LMP2 rules, with gasoline racing engines limited to 3.4 liters normally aspirated or 2.0 liters turbocharged. Diesels can displace no more than 3.7 liters. The current LMP1 cars will be allowed to compete in 2011, but performance will be restricted by as-yet-unannounced means that will likely include more weight and smaller air restrictors.

You haven't been paying attention? Acura doesn't have a LMP1 car anymore.

Didn't know that. It always gets unpredictable when major rule changes are made. Can't wait for next year.

Even though Acura won't field a LMP1 car next year, Honda (HPD) is prepping a gasoline 2.6-liter V-6 twin turbo engine specially for customer teams to compete in next season's LMP1 category.

More news on the new rules:

Le Mans organiser the Automobile Club de l'Ouest has confirmed that in 2011 it will be able to adjust the rules during the course of its championships' seasons to prevent any type of car becoming too dominant.

The 'article 19' rule will apply to the new Intercontinental Le Mans Cup, Le Mans Series and American Le Mans Series, and is aimed to solve the long-running issue of petrol-powered cars being unable to compete with the diesel technology that Audi and Peugeot have introduced since 2006. The new regulations intend to keep the top petrol and diesel teams within two per cent of each other's pace.

A statement from the ACO promised the introduction of: "Performance adjustment through the application of article 19 [the ACO reserves itself the possibility of balancing performances between the different engines and technologies] as well as the two per cent rule.

"This means keeping the lap times of the quickest cars in each technology within a range of two per cent in relation to the quickest car, all technologies combined, through decisions taken by the ACO."

The official green light for the rule change will be welcomed by Aston Martin Racing, which has committed to an all-new petrol LMP1 car in the expectation that the regulations would give petrol machinery a chance to fight for outright victory in the 24-hour race again after five seasons of diesel dominance.

In other 2011 adjustments confirmed by the ACO, LMP2 becomes a fully-fledged 'pro-am' category across all the Le Mans championships, with at least one gentleman driver - as assessed under the ACO's driver categorisation - mandatory in each car's line-up.

The GT classes are also being restructured into a single GTE category, split into GTE Am and GTE Pro. The amateur class must include a gentleman driver in each entry, and cars must be at least a year old, whereas GTE Pro is unrestricted, but will feature performance balancing.
Aston given a helping hand.
