I just realized that there are only 2 weeks to the start of the season.

Please review the rules from the 2015 season (post #1). If anyone wants to propose any rule changes, now is the time to discuss. Rules will be finalized by March 8.

I know at least one person was very unhappy with how bonus points were handed out for predicting the final standings. The purpose of the bonus points is to provide some twist and turns. However, if you feel that the the weighting of the bonus became too twisty and too turny, then now is the time to propose changes. If we want to, we can even take out the bonus points completely.

I think +2 points for maintaining the lead is a bit too much. This would make comebacks too difficult. So I'm against it. I am in favor of ditching the bonus points for the championship though.

Not really. I don't think it is appropriate to lock down the rules on the eve of the first race. Let's say at the last minute we maintain the championship bonuses, well, some people might not have submitted their picks for that.

We can extend the deadline to the last minute, but if that is the case, people should still submit their championship predictions now, just in case.

I'm not a fan of rewarding successive success. It would be like giving the orioles a run for every game Cal ripen started, doesn't make sense to me. Given the dominance of the Merc's maybe an extra couple of points for picking the best of the rest might make things interesting. Or maybe a pick the top 5 finishers correctly and get a few bonus points.

As for the championship bonus points, I'm indifferent to keeping them or not. I'd say if we decide on an alternative "bonus" point system then cancel out the season bonus.

But you're a fan of disproportionately awarded points a la last year because of the gap from 1-2nd? If that's what we are doing with championship points I'm out. I'm not playing that stupid little game again. Additionally, I led like 9 races which would be 16 points bonus. That's nowhere near the tally created by this driver/mfr scenario.

Let's think about this for a moment.

What is the purpose of having bonus points?

If you look back at the initial intent, it was meant to give a surprise boost at the end of the year. The problem we had was that it's >90% certain that Mercedes and Hamilton will win the championship in the current state. So if everyone picks the same champion at the beginning of the year, then it's pointless. That was why I made the change at the beginning of last year. In effect, picking the third place finisher became the key to getting the bonus boost.

Maybe the bonus point was too extreme, so that might be the real discussion we should be having.

On the other hand, the +2 points system for maintaining the lead could make it impossible for others to catch up. If we had that system last year, Chief would have had an insurmountable lead well before the last race. So I think that is too extreme as well.

That's why I'm in favor of no bonus points at all. Just keep it simple. Straight up battle to the end.

All this bonus points for this, that, and the other is nonsense. I vote no bonus for anything. And while we are at it, screw dropping your lowest race at the end of the year too. Just make it purely based on what you're awarded for your driver/team pic from each week. No gimmicks.

West, do you, or anyone else propose eliminating the dropping of the lowest points? The original purpose was because sometimes people forget to make a pick and then they get discouraged and stop playing. In reality, I don't think it makes too much of a difference, because most people get a goose egg at some point.
You could also argue that dropping this would encourage people to be less lazy.

That's what it looks like. Read the rules from last year's thread, post 1. You just pick your selection for each race. Choose wisely, because you can only pick the same driver 3 times, and each constructor 4 times.

No, what it inadvertently encourages is someone getting a zero as a low score and another getting a "2" for example. F-C and West are tied at the end of the season except F-C's lowest score is a "0" while West's is a "2." West would then lose by 2 points because of that rule. It's unfair and should be dropped altogether. Don't pick a champ, a team, no bonus, no dropped lowest score.
