Worth getting AMEX Gold???

I currently use the AMEX Blue. Works for me... Get points, etc.

I can upgrade to the AMEX Gold, free for the first year. Should I do it?

It would be $120 the next year to renew... I don't carry a balance, so I could give a shit about having to pay it off monthly.

Never paid for a charge/credit card. Should I start now?

I don't think it would be worth the yearly fee....If you get the same results with the blue card why pay for a gold card?

That;s what I was thinking. I also have the blue and get at least two letters from Amex a month saying that I should switch. I just don't see the point on switching over. I mean, I have Membership Rewards for free with blue. With Gold, you have to pay what, $35 extra a year?? Yeah, I have a limit on how much I can spend on the blue, but honeslty, I have never come anywhere near my limit.

To me, I just don't see the benefits of switching to the Gold except to get a gold card. But heck, these days, a Gold card is nothing.

Now, if they would just send me that pretty black card . . . . . .

I have the AmEx Gold Rewards Plus card.

I get double points for a whole bunch of stuff I charge on it.

Just to give you an idea, I cashed out pretty much all my points 9/01 and since then I've racked up almost 200,000 points. I obviously haven't spent anywhere near $200,000.

240,000 points gets me and my wife back to Hawaii first class non-stop.

So what do you get double points for?? I know on my Blue that I also get double points for a lot of things, gas, post office, supermarket, etc.

Points kick a$$ though!! That is how I buy all of my x-mas presents every year. Great presents at no cost-can't beat that!!

That's what I currently use.

Works great...because I fly Delta 90% of the time.

Only bad thing is my school doesn't take AMEX to pay tuition so I use an American West platinum for that. Get a free flight every year.

Gives me free upgrades with medallion points all the time. I have never paid first class rate...yet I fly it 75% of the time.

Unless you will be using it for company re-imbursements...don't bother. The annual fee doesn't make it worth it. I use mine profusely for household items & gas, but never seem to get too far beyond what I actually pay in the annual fee.

I've had both...still have my green card...what they DO NOT tell you is...if you have a green, get the gold, then cancel the gold...they still maintain your rewards points anyhow. The gold has been closed for 6 months, but I don't pay the $140 or whatever a year, only the $55...points still rack up the same.

Every other month I get invitations for Gold. I reject paying annual fees for a "convenience" card. I might just get the AMEX rewards for Costco members, and pay the costo annual fee with the 1% ~ 3% that card offers me.

I also pay my cards in full, carry low cash, and make all possible transaction with plastic. It is great to measure the spendings online every day.

I just recently started to consider this as well...since the Costco fee was going up, seemed like the smartest move.

Getting the itemized year-end statement from AmEx makes it well worth it for me to have the Gold Card.

Oh and...... 10,000 posts

I though this was standard for all credit card companies. I get them from my Visa and MC cards

Not yet, but sometime in my life, I will!!

And, seeing that the qualifications for that card are so high, I highly doubt that anyone on this board has it.

If you charge over 150k a year in your AMEX, sure you will need to make at least 4x times that and even much more.

AMEX Centurion is for those who really have a ton of money, and buy expensive cars with plastic.

or, you use it for business purposes. Back when we owned a larger compnay, we charged about $500k to $900k onto my father's card. Amex wanted him to switch up to at least platinum, but he wanted to keep his Gold. Damnit, we could have had a damn Black card!!!
But damn, the vacations we took with just the points alone was well worth it!!

I was talking with my financial advisor from Amex and he said that he had a client give out 3 platinum cards to his friend just so he could charge enough to be considered for the black. He got it eventually, but it did take some time.

I'm reading the book "Millionaire Next Door" and thought there was an interesting statistic on what Credit cards millionaires have in their wallet.

Master Card, Visa, Sears (over 50% of millionaires had these), and JC Penney came in 4th place...

AMEX and the other high profile cards were alot lower on the list then I would have thought...

I remember reading the book a few years back and I remember the same thing. It is very interesting to see how these people make their money and how they spend the money. It definately gave mea new perspective on things, but I contintued to ignore the principles of the book.
