Sorry, but that's not how it works. Out of the 6% commission the sales agent gets for selling a home, half goes to the buyers agent... so that's 3% out the door. Then the real estate office you work for takes anywhere from 2% to 2.5% leaving you making anywhere from 1/2% to 1%. If you're lucky you'll work for an office that only takes half... leaving you with 1.5%, but that's rare.
So, sell a $350k home and at 1.5% you get $5250, at 1% you get $3500... and that's before taxes. Additionally a good agent typically spends between $500 and $1000 promoting the house. We are thinking of selling, and our friend who's an agent says within 5 days of signing she'll spend $1000 promoting our house including but not limited to, virtual tours, advertising on websites, curbside flyers, postcards around the area, a bound information packet in the home, and so on. Plus, as a realtor you don't have any benefits like medical, dental, vision, or 401k plans, and so on.
So having a good corporate job blows away being a realtor any day unless you're willing to bust your ass 7 days a week 8-12 hours per day to make sure you get a ton of sales per month. Eventually you won't have to work so hard b/c you'll get referrals, but it takes years to get to that point...

That's in a perfect world when you own the firm, in reality your seldom the listing and selling agent so your comission is cut in half off the bat to 3% and typically your firm gets half of your cut either way. So that great 6% turns into 1.5% real quick for most realtors, look at the volume of realtors in this country, most of them don't make much at all, the market for that profession is close to(if not there already) saturated. Also look at most realtors, I am sure we all know a few, are they living much if any better then the rest of us? Not the 30 or so that I know, in fact over half of them can't make enough to do it as a full time job.
Banking and finance is where the money is at in this country right now(assuming you are coming in on the ground floor). It won't stay that way forever, but its not going any where any time soon.

Designing, developing and testing computer programs requires some pretty advanced math skills and creative problem-solving ability. If you've got them, though, you can work and live where you want: Telecommuting is quickly becoming widespread.
The profession skews young -- the up-all-night-coding thing gets tired -- but consulting and management positions aren't hard to come by once you're experienced.
What's cool Cutting-edge projects, like designing a new video game or tweaking that military laser. Extra cash from freelance gigs. Plus, nothing says cool like great prospects.
What's not Jobs at the biggest companies tend to be less creative (think Neo, pre-Matrix). Outsourcing is a worry. Eyestrain and back, hand and wrist problems are common.
Top-paying job Release engineers, who are responsible for the final version of any software product, earn six figures.

Look up long term leases for autos and pay option, no-down mortgages.
Bet his nut on the MBZ is at least $1000/mo.
Or perhaps he had a few good months and made a pile of cash. Watch him and listen over the next six months if he didn't do it right.

Those who are great, have no reason to tell you because who they are and what they are capable of speaks for itself.

The problem with realtors is theres no barrier to entry (you can become a realtor within a couple of months), so a there's a ton of realtors around (alot of whom had other jobs and decided to become realtors when the housing market was high and they're jobs got downsized).

1) He's been in the game a long time and owns his own office.
2) He has a huge mortgage and car payment and is living beyond his means
3) He's one of the few very successful agents
I know many people who have nicer cars then we do, and a larger house then us, yet, we make more money then they do and more in the bank. They're also living with $5k-$6k per month mortgages where we are under $1950/mo and have no car payments. So sometimes appearances do not mean anything.

One of the mottos I live by... "Those who know, don't talk". Basically, like you said, if they are great and they have "it", they don't need to tell everyone. They just do what they do. It's the one's that talk who are full of shit.

He said that new guys had to work their way up. Company did not give good house/area to the new guys. He also said that new guys had to work in the crappy area for at least 2 years before the company gave them something nicer. Many times they had to "buy" the way up he said.

I think you're a good guy JB but sometimes you tend to flaunt what you have or are going to have a bit much. Cars, tvs, the new $500,000 house you're buying.

The housing market in CA during the last 4 years has been far beyond average. And now we are in for a cooling market, which will hurt everyone in real estate.
Tell us what car your friend is driving next year, my money is on something more economical by that time

I did create one topic when I bought the plasma earlier this year, but no different then everyone else posting topics about them buying TVs
. If I comment about a technology people used to reply questioning the opinion, so now I may mention I own a certain one so they know my opinion is based on experience, but it's always done in passing and is never the focal point of the topic. It's just used to prove a point or example... same as all of the others do when they post about their experiences with a particular set. People do know that I am a Sammy fan and like staying up on TV technology, in fact, I get emails, PMs and IMs from people looking for my opinion on something. So yes, I post in that forum a lot b/c I enjoy it (afterall, it was my suggestion to create it b/c I do enjoy it), but aside from one TV topic, typically I just respond with opinions and advice.I don't talk about cars anymore then anyone else on here. It is a car forum afterall. I haven't even owned my own car since I sold my TL-S in May since I work from home.
Maybe I replied with stuff about cars I'm interested in in topics live Gav's when he went out and drove a bunch of high-end cars, but so did many others. The house topic was looking for opinions. You'll notice I never mentioned prices or any other exact numbers for the reason that it's irrelevant and it may come across the wrong way. I was simply looking for outside opinions b/c we really are torn and I wanted to hear a variety of feedback from people other then my friends and family (although I wish it was near the price you mentioned, b/c then it wouldn't be much of a decision). If I wanted to flaunt I'd throw numbers out there left and right and be like, we're looking to spend this much on a house, blah blah blah, but I don't and I almost never do (with the exception that I have mentioned what we bought our first home for, but since that was 4 years ago when we went to contract, I figured statute of limitations allows it). That topic was also really not all that different then all of the other house topics in H&G when people talk about buying a home or show pics of their house under construction, etc.
So honestly, I have no idea what you're talking about. Between this topic and the one in Car Talk when I was giving that dude advice with about half a dozen other guys (yet you singled out my reply), I'm not sure what your problem is lately. But each time you've come at me with something they seem to be out of left field accusations with little to no validity.

Is this study meant for people living in India? Since that's where most of those jobs end up... haha
