For-profit colleges yield low graduation rates, high student debt

The graduation rates for most of these schools are lower than I expected.
9% for University of Phoenix is shocking.

IMO a far better solution would be Community College unless you are going for something like Auto Technician or HVAC. With those it may be worth looking into local Vo-Tech schools. If you bomb out of Vo-Tech or Community College you are less likely to be out 5 figures.

the median debt load for graduates at for-profit colleges is $31,190

College / Total enrollment / Graduation rate

1. University of Phoenix / 238,326 / 9%
2. DeVry University / 24,291 / 31%
3. The Art Institute / 31,130 / 41%
4. Berkeley College / 5,889 / 35%
5. Sullivan University / 2,862 / 15%
6. Westwood College / 6,644 / 27%
7. Int’l Academy of Design and Technology / 5,322 / 16%
8. School of Visual Arts / 3,351 / 67%
9. Illinois Institute of Art / 3,319 / 44%
10. ITT Tech / 17,375 / 66%
TOTAL: 338,509 / 20%

For-profit colleges spend millions to beat regulation attempt
http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_theloo...lation-attempt
The for-profit education industry has spent millions over the past year to quash regulations that would withhold federal funds from colleges that saddle students with debts they cannot repay.
Nearly half of all for-profit students will default on their loans, suggesting that their outstanding loans outpace their earning power.
...federal funding accounts for as much as 90 percent of total revenue in some instances.
The for-profit industry says withholding the federal funds will prevent many lower-income students from attending their schools, and perhaps from getting a higher education altogether. For-profit students take 25 percent of federal higher-education Pell Grants, even though they account for just 10 percent of the college population.

This is so true. I was in the sub prime mortgage business and obviously lost my job.. I decided to go to Culinary school and learn a new trade. I went to "Le Cordon Blue" and they wanted like 40,000 dollars!!! INSANE! That's tuition alone!
I went instead to Valencia College here in Orlando, one of the best community colleges in the country. Im loving Culinary and my tuition will cost me appx. 12,000 to graduate, and Im told by people in my industry that the name doesn't even carry that much weight anyway. These "diploma mills" are rip offs, same goes for Full Sail.

I graduated from ITT twice and as I recall nearly 100% of my class came with me.....I would not blame the school I blame our overall lack of parenting and our society's unusaliy inept inability to hold people accountable for being stupid......

^ I think the big difference here is that ITT/Devry will actually teach you usable trade that you can walk away with whereas places such as Phoenix are just direct diploma mills.
