NEW TAX question.
And for the ones that are Accountants. ...
My cousin did her taxes and she was suppose to get back 247 (round there) They took of about 1230 of federal taxes. and she said she went to school and total for that was about 2450.00,. Accountant told her she could only claim 2000.00 so she will be getting back all the 1230.00 they took off. The thing is that she didnt go to school Watt the hell.. i want that much money back too!!!!
any pointers? can this be done one time? Or is there a major risk at IRS getting you for it and then having to pay it back?

Colleges send you forms that show how much you paid in tuition for a given year, so I am not sure that's a good idea claiming that $2000 credit without proper forms. Anyone can lie on their tax forms but getting away with it is another issue.

"and she said she went to school and total for that was about 2450.00"
"The thing is that she didnt go to school"
so did she go to school or not?
you can claim education costs by hope, lifetime, or higher eduation credits
hope will give u the most back but can only be claimed for 1st two years of college

I was audited once, my audit came clean; I had been "bumped" for audit because of extraordinary unreimbursed medical expenses. The audit was painless, about an hour long, and I left with no loss, no gain. Still, it was tiresone, anxiety provoking and really upsetting.
