From CNN...

Temporary credit for home buyers: The bill increases the size of an existing temporary and refundable first-time home buyer credit to $8,000, up from $7,500. It also removes the requirement under current law that the credit be paid back if the buyer stays in the home for at least three years. And it would extend the credit's expiration date to Dec. 1, 2009, from July 1. Those eligible for this credit must have purchased a home after Jan. 1, 2009, and before Dec. 1, 2009.
To me that means both the $7,500 & $8,000 credits will not have to be paid back.

Ok based on...

Looks like only purchases in 2009 don't have to be paid back.. LAME

Just did my taxes tonight. Owe $376 to the blood-sucking feds, and getting $88 back from NJ. I always owe a couple hundred bucks.

It's a good thing, assuming you are handling your finances correctly.

I owe $41 to California, got back $400 from the feds. I'd adjust, but I don't want to end up owing a lot. I think it's close enough.

5,000 back from Fed and state. Paying off the credit card for a new washer-dryer combo and plumbing work.

I agree with others about not giving the Fed my money. The Mrs. disagrees. Her thoughts are that it's like a free gift. I think it's just plain stupid to allow them to have any of your money- unless they would like to pay interest, like I DO when I owe THEM.

I know it is better to owe a little than to get a huge refund, but mentally it adds insult to injury for me. I should be satisfied with my results but I also wouldn't mind gettind back about $100 or so.

$1k-2k. Putting it in the stash towards a new house (or buying speakers for the home theater, depending on how you look at it ).

In 2010, I am going to keep all my tax witholding and store it in a savings account. That will be an interesting change.
Keep in mind that if you don't pay any of your tax until you file you will be hit with a fee for not withholding (forget what this is called). I think it's like if you owe more then 1k. (something like that or i'm making it all up)

Did you e-file or mail in your returns?

I just mailed our returns in this week (married filing separately). Her money is going into savings for the summer, since she probably won't be teaching summer school - or toward he next car.

Mine is going mostly to savings for a house, partly towards CC bill and partly towards some photo gear.

FYI, If you mail in and don't choose direct deposit that is the worst scenerio. Last year me and my fiancee filed at the same time. She Efiled with direct deposit and because of a problem I had to mail in. She got her refund in about a week and it took me about 7 weeks to get my check. Luckily for me I was able to efile this year with direct deposit. I should have my money early next week.

We both use direct deposit, but you cannot e-file your fed return if you are married filing separately. It worked out to our benefit to file separately, and will continue to do so until that changes. Our joint refund would have been just slightly higher than my separate refund.

I'm getting 10k.
Buying a house was a great move. 7500 is the 'interest fee loan' for 1st time homebuyers.

I get a whopping 61 dollar fed return...after leaving my 19 dollar return with them last year. I'm happy with that.
