<--- running quickly away from emigrant

Given HSBC's reputation and establishment, I think their interface will be much much better than emigrant's. But I'll still have to wait 6-8 business days to find out

Why do you have wait 6-8 days? Mine got oppened immediately:

They freaking ask you what you had for breakfast this morning. Golee, they freak me out when they threw a multiple answer questionarie at me, and they asked who my mortgage company was, the payment, and my ACURA TL loan too.

Ya, I got approved immediately, but I they said my username and password will be mailed separately and it could take 6 to 8 business days before I get both. Only then can I log in for the first time.

Do you have any other account with them or something?

Has anyone ever called customer support for ING or HSBC? How long was the wait time?

I called Emigrant twice. Once was 15 minutes. I hung up after 25 minutes the second time.

I set up an HSBC acct 4 weeks ago by transferring some $$$ from Citi. Piece of cake and I'm damn glad I did it. My wife had a CD that doesn't pay as much as this acct does.

Looks like they are pretty strict with the requirements
What is the Minimum Balance to open/to earn interest?
The minimum balance required to open this account and earn interest is $1.

What is the Maximum balance?
The bank reserves the right, with notice, to transfer to any other HSBC deposit account you have, the amount of any transaction, excluding interest, that causes your Online Savings accounts(s) to exceed an aggregate balance of $2,000,000.
it looks like there are limits on automatic transfers from the account, but that's about it.

I was interested in getting a 6-month CD from my local bank, but now I'm thinking that I should open one of these online accounts. What is the better choice?

Whats the rate you will get at the bank? If it is lower than the online acounts are the better choice

Online accounts are great and convient. I doubt your bank would offer 4%+ yields on CD's in the 6-12 month range. I would go for the online account, either emigrant or this HSBC thing.

If you want CDs, go with ING. Emigrant doesn't offer any online, and I haven't looked into HSBC's.

Thats sucks ass. I am selling 6 month CD's at about 4% right now and you only need $1000 to open.
You may want to try another bank.

Wow, that's even more impressive than ING because HSBC's includes current balances as well as new deposits.

Dammit. With these guys always trying to one up each other, I'll never make a decision on where to sign up and my money will stay at the bank making a whopping 0.6%.

^^^ Right now, I've got both an ING account and an HSBC account. I'll give you a referral to ING if you want... it gets you an extra $25.

The thing making the decision are the charges that apply when canceling a HSBC account before 6 months. No charges for anything with ING

They claim right on their website that they have the highest interest rate in the US. Which is now BS.

That is a good idea - I have an account with Emigrant and ING, but will have to open one with HSBC just to be safe. I have most of my savings in Emigrant now, but will switch it to whomever pays me the most (duh!)

Technically, they do, but they are not the ONLY one with that rate. Emigrant has reacted pretty quickly in the past to competition.

I was just reading the fine prints Terms and Disclosures of HSBC Direct, boy, they charge $15 for every fund transfer-in and $30 for every fund transfer-out!!!!

Damn!!! That is a ripoff.

Anyone here with a HSBC Direct can verify that?

You must be talking about an investment account not an OnlineSavings account. There are no transfer fees for the savings account
