Hasbro and MTG

Not sure if anyone here is a MTG player. I remember getting into the game ~30 years ago, and now my son is getting into it as well. My biggest regret is not saving the rare cards I had back then

The game has definitely changed since, the focus on revenue for Hasbro has had an interesting impact on collectors and players (plus the response from Hasbro has been really entertaining to watch)

Hasbro (HAS) – The toy maker's stock slid 5.2% in the premarket following a double-downgrade to "underperform" from "buy" at Bank of America. The move comes after BofA conducted what it calls a "deep dive" on Hasbro's "Magic: The Gathering" trading card game business. BofA said Hasbro has been overprinting cards and destroying the long-term value of the business.

“Like any market for any other collectible products, some products and individual cards do become more collectible than others and values can change over time due to a multitude of external factors, many entirely unrelated to the number of cards,” she said.

I had to do little (light) research on this segment a year or so ago. Here are two quotes that may be relevant (although not specific to Hasbro).

"As of March 2020, over 30 billion Pokémon TCG cards have been sold worldwide. [....] The latest Pokémon games (Sword and Shield) have sold over 20 million units in a little over a year."

"In 2019, the global Collectible Card Game market size was US$ 9949.63 million and it is expected to reach US$ 27294.79 million by the end of 2026, with a CAGR of 15.89% during 2020-2026."
