I know this post is old, but for anyone else I would talk to you insurance company. Not sure in the surrounding states, but in VA I believe they cannot raise your rates for windshield replacement. In the past I have had windshields replaced on previous cars and recently my girlfriend had hers replaced and both insurance companies said they cannot raise the rates for windshield/glass replacement in VA. So depending on you're deductible you may want to call your insurance company and see what they say. My rates nor my gf's ever went up.

Raising another old post from the dead, but this issue is widely misunderstood.

Glass damage due to road hazards (debris/rock thrown at glass) is covered by the comprehensive portion of your insurance. Claims under the comp portion (Fire/theft/wildlife/weather/flood) do not affect your rates.

You'll also note that the comprehensive and collision portions can have different deductibles. A lower deductible on comp is cheap (for me about $25 a year difference between a $1k and a $100 deductible) while a lower deductible on the collision portion is expensive (about $500 a year for the same difference) Accordingly I have $100 decuctible for comp and a $1k for collision.

Over the last 10 years I've whacked 3 deer and had 4 new windshields - all covered by comprehensive.
