Our CEL came on today and the mechanic told us that it the catalytic converter needed to be replaced. Anything that we can try that’s cheaper than $1,500?

 

Many states stop emissions inspections after 15-20 years. So a cat delete could be an option if you're willing to put up with the gas smell.

 

you dont need OEM for that old a car.

just use rockauto . com or something, buy an aftermarket online there or from NAPA or partssource/etc. and OEM equalvalent will be maybe $250-$600 depending on brand/quality. or just go cheap hiflow cat from well known exh brands!
