TMPS Issue with aftermarket wheels
TMPS Issue with aftermarket wheels
Hi All,
I finally swapped my OEM 16" wheels to brand new 17" Civic Si wheels, installed a rear camber kit, and corrected my alignment on my ILX. 15mins after the install the TPMS light comes on and stays on for the next hour. Been searching on how to correct this issue and looked through the owners manual but there aren't any fixes I can do. I was under the impression that the TPMS system should autosync with the new TPMS sensors. FYI the new sensors were taken from my old Lexus IS250, but as far as I know TPMS sensors should be universal. There are a couple of root causes I think:
1) New tires are inflated to higher PSI more than my existing? I may need to drop my PSI some.
2) Bad sensors on new wheels?
3) Need to "sync" TPMS system to my wheels?
4) Incorrect "size" TPMS sensors?
Any suggestions on how to correct this issue?
Thanks,
Chris

I dont know if a tire shops can do it, if not though and unless there is a performance reason I would probably just roll with the light on (again unless it messes with the ECU and somehow screws up performance).
Honda/Acura will calibrate or sync it but I heard they charge a pretty penny to do it.

When I had my X the person did not know how to do it at discount tire center so I rolled with it on (the car had just come out but still).
To me it really never mattered I check my tires all the time and run the PSI I prefer not the recommended

I have two sets of OEM Acura and it takes a few miles for mine to synch up when I switch from Winter to Summer rubber and back.
Being that the ones you have are Lexus, they may not work, but then against could be something completely different.

Hey Chris, the only thing I can think of is to stop by and have an Acura tech look at it because there is a 'calibration' procedure that has to be performed on the TPMS. I remember when I first got my ILX, right away it had a TPMS error. I took it back to the dealership and they told me that technician who'd installed my accessory 17" wheels had not performed the calibration.
Side note, would love to see pics of those Si wheels on your ILX.

The dealer should be able to calibrate the frequency on the new sensors to match up with the Tire Pressure Monitor System.
Mine did the same before I took it to the dealer.
Unless the Toyotas are bad sensors and can't be re-calibrated.

Thanks for the input guys. I think the issue is the frequency and calibration of the TPMS and I"ll have that adjusted this weekend. It doesn't seem to make much sense for each manufacturer to have their own specific TPMS that can't be transferred to other vehicles. Frequencies may change but the device itself should be an industry standard.
Pics to come soon!

Went to the first tire place and they couldnt get the TPMS sensors calibrated because their library only went up to 2012 vehicles. Looks like I'll have to go to Acura to resolve.

Looks sharp and am very interested in how you make out after visiting the dealer. Am thinking (like others) that OEM TPMS sensors will only work with the OEM brand vehicle, but certainly could be wrong.
