shitty CHP

Hi not sure if anyone here has done this but i bought my Acura ilx from a salvage auction. All good fixed up but today when i went to the C.H.P to get my car inspected for stolen parts the trunk vin number was painted over. and its considered " stolen" so it must be taken off my car and destroyed (very stupid and even if it was stolen the original owner wound't even get it back lol ).....

So, if anyone can send ways to swap trunks i would glady say thank you! I just need the swap the metal frame thank god so its not too bad i guess...

Can you register it in a different state via someone who will loan you an address, then important to Crapifonia?

That is stupid AF. What if the trunk had no vin, ie. "Aftermarket Part"?

Why are you down on the CHP? They're doing what the law says they need to do.

You are brave buying a salvage car. How the heck does one "swap" a trunk? Is your car going to have any rigidity whatsoever after this "procedure?"

I've always seen aftermarket fenders, bumpers, hoods... Why not trunks? Who can or can't prove where it came from? How does anyone know weather you got it at pull-a-part or pulled tge vin off. Sone brands don't vin their body panels. I know Toyota does, but not sure about other brands.

Ummm, are you sure about Toyota not branding their body panels with the VIN?

Maybe I posted that incorrectly. I know Toyota stamps the panels. Well, they use a regular old sticker.

I just can't believe the police are even involved in something so ridiculous. And then have such petty, wasteful laws on how to handle this. All in all, I'm probably more aggrieved by this policy than you are.

I'm so glad I live in the south where stupid laws don't exist.

Reading your post has me in utter shock.

Hope you get this sorted. Can you get one off eBay?

Folks, the law isn't as stupid as you think; the intent is to kill the market for stolen parts. Body shops typically warrant repairs for a certain period of time, and if the owners cannot get their cars registered because the shop put stolen parts on a car, then they are held liable for replacing the part which was removed and destroyed. Like it or don't, such laws help us all.

So are you talking the trunk lid, or the whole trunk? And if whole trunk, what does that mean? I'm guessing if just the lid you can find it aftermarket and have it painted. But if you can share exactly what pieces make up the "trunk" that might help get you more input...

Can you not find another one in a salvage yard. Most vehicles are written off from front end damage, so you should be able to find one. Also seeing that you are looking into changing the rear taillights to the LED's you should just find one from a 2016-2018 model year - I am willing to bet it will fit!

This clears it up a lot. I didn't know you only needed a trunk LID. I thought you needed the entire trunk cavity.

I'm not sure. I'd just order an OEM 2016 spoiler and install it.

Migh as well do paint correction on that trunk while it's off.

That pic is not the 2016 A-SPEC spoiler. The A-SPEC spoiler has a chrome strip running the length of it.
